sick of saying this isn’t one of my favorite modern horror movies— maybe just one of my favorites in general: SINISTER fuckin’ slams
a surprisingly self-aware critique of how our fascination with gruesome entertainment may get us killed— from true crime to snuff films: no better personified than through a demon that literally exists in media and corrupts the minds of children
a somewhat cynical and old fashioned perspective— yet this is somewhat of an old fashioned movie for something so recent— just a solid set of horror set pieces (every one of the home movies is amazing), incredible use of lighting (all revolving around flashlights piercing pure darkness in a really terrifying way), one of the most haunting film scores I’ve ever heard (only matched by any of Christopher Young’s other horror masterpieces as one of the greatest horror score composers of all time such as HELLRAISER, DRAG ME TO HELL, and THE EMPTY MAN), and Ethan Hawke in his sexiest cardigan (fuck me!)— a strictly for scares nightmarefest that isn’t afraid to just be exactly what it is: these days I kinda wish we had more of those
