Community engagement often happens in real time—through social media, events, or private conversations—which means colleagues and readers might miss valuable insights. Our panel shared what they’ve learned about effective community engagement practices. Dive into the intricacies of the newly published Collaboration Toolkit, a groundbreaking online resource developed by INN and RJI. Bridget Thoreson led us through the toolkit’s features, including its innovative searchable database, customizable templates, and project management resources. Impact Architects shared early results from our 2023 Gather Community Survey along with lessons learned from the results, questions answered, and discussions on how we might shape Gather’s future together. During this Gather Lightning Workshop, attendees collaborated on a document that you can take back to your newsroom, including lessons learned from journalists who have incorporated texting as a regular part of their work. Airtable is fast becoming a key part of the engaged journalist’s toolkit. More newsrooms are using it to thread together the many different ways they connect with their communities including email, SMS, surveys, events and more. Up the Block aims to gather resources on gun violence on a single website for Philadelphians to use and connect people with information on recovering from shootings, keeping young people safe, and holding local leaders accountable. This Lightning Chat invited audience development and engagement practitioners to discuss their evolving needs for relationship management software (typically referred to as CRM), solutions others have found or developed, and the need for potentially new tools or approaches. La Nacion launched Stranded Abroad collecting information and sharing stories from those trapped in foreign countries due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Documented engages with its sources through a mobile app called WhatsApp. Users are able ask questions and raise concerns and can get professional answers quickly. Understanding journalism’s impact is fundamental to earning communities’ trust and serving their information needs. Learn not just WHAT newsrooms are measuring but also HOW they are tracking it. This post takes a look at how an organization planned and facilitated a virtual event, which tools they used, and the benefits of why they are already started planning their next one. How do you choose a video streaming service if your event is over 200 people and you need multiple breakout rooms? Martin Pratt will walk us through Zoom vs. StreamYard vs. Restream (and maybe a few others) and talk about which service may work best in what situation.
