Time-Shifting

I’d completely forgotten that one of the most brilliant parts of working here in Paris (leaving aside, for the moment, the bare fact that I’m working here in Paris) is that everyone who wants to ask me to do something is six to nine timezones away. What this means, in point of practice, is that when I get up in the morning here, it’s around 9 pm in California, so the influx of e-mail has more or less stopped; what’s in the inbox is what will be in the inbox. And then, as folks in California get up and start heading back to their email — well, it’s 5 pm here; time for an aperitif!

When I’m in a rough patch in my project, it’s a problem — the usual distractions aren’t there. But when, as now, things are going really well — hey, the usual distractions aren’t there!
