Corroding Our Solidarity
Chachra points to the uses of the "carbon footprint" as an advertising mechanism that functions not only to make individuals hold themselves -- rather than corporations that continue to profit from fossil fuels -- responsible for climate change, but also to turn individuals against one another, scolding one another for their choices and (not at all incidentally) "corrod[ing] our solidarity with others" (195). It's hard not to conclude that this effect is intended to prevent us from developing the collective governance mechanisms we need in order to make real change.
