Bananas
We had super overripe bananas, and I had seen a recipe, and so I got it in my head to make a banana cake. I am not a baker, so this is a rare event.
R. came into the kitchen while I was whisking the dry ingredients together, said nothing, and left. He was back in the classroom today for the first time after last Monday here, and so I didn’t think much of it. He’s got a lot on his mind, I thought.
Later he mentioned being super excited about the cake, and amazed that I made it, and so I asked what was up when he walked into the kitchen before. He stared at me for a second and said:
“You don’t bake. And I associate baking with a few things. And so my brain literally went:
- She’s making biscuits.
- Is she making biscuits?
- She’s not making biscuits.
And then I left.”
I wish I could fully explain why I love this sequence so much.
