Celebrating Veterans Day is a time-honored tradition at Seven Acres and The Medallion. So many of their wonderful residents served in the armed forces during World War II, post-war, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Seven Acres and Medallion veterans were recognized Sunday, Nov. 12, at a special flag ceremony conducted by members of Jewish War Veterans Houston-Levy Post 574. The Veterans Day program included a patriotic concert presented by the Gulf Coast Concert Band. The event was hosted by Seven Acres longtime supporters Vicky and Michael Richker.

The flag ceremony began with JWV post members’ presentation of colors and leading the “Pledge of Allegiance.” Michael Richker led the audience in singing the “Star-Spangled Banner.”

A special patriotic musical program was held in the Seven Acres auditorium. Under the direction of director Benjamin Butler, the Gulf Coast Concert Band played “The United States Armed Forces Salute,” which features hymns, marches and fight songs from the Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Air Force and Navy.

Accompanied by the band, Michael Richker sang a medley of Broadway songs from “Hello Dolly,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Mame” and led the audience in the “Ultimate Patriotic Sing-Along,” a collection of stanzas from other popular patriotic songs.

As hosts of the program, the Richkers greeted the crowd,

“It is our great pleasure to sponsor this event every year,” Michael began. “At this time, I ask you to pause for a moment to recognize those dedicated soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces and their leaders who are protecting Israel. Let us also pray for the safe return of all the hostages to their families.”

Accompanied on the piano by activity assistant Diana Warner, Richker led the audience in chanting the Hebrew prayer for the State of Israel.

Seven Acres president Michael Feinstein also greeted residents and guests. “We wish to thank Vicky and Michael, as well as the Jewish War Veterans Houston-Levy Post for making this program possible. We salute all of our veterans today and thank them for their service to our country.”

Barry Goldstein, Seven Acres CEO, served in the U.S. Army for six years and participated in Operation Desert Storm. A member of Houston-Levy Post 574, he said, “We are so appreciative to Vicky and Michael Richker, who have underwritten this major program honoring our veterans for the last 15 years.”
