Former Texas state rep to speak on politics
Congregation Brith Shalom, 4610 Bellaire Blvd., and Hazak are hosting a special talk by former Texas state Rep. Paul Colbert on Sunday, July 14, at 2 p.m.
Colbert’s talk, “Inside Politics – Should I be Worried?” will focus on the current political environment in Texas.
First elected to the Texas House of Representatives in November 1980, Colbert, 74, represented District 132 in Houston until 1992. He served as chairman for Budget and Oversight of the Public Education Committee and as a member of the Appropriations Committee for eight years. He also served as vice chair of the House Committee on Higher Education and as a member of the Urban Affairs, Intergovernmental Affairs, Judiciary and the Rules and Resolutions committees.
Colbert is now a consultant in business, strategic planning and problem-solving, public affairs and public policy. Since leaving the House, he has continued to have a major impact on legislation in Texas, particularly in public and higher education and school finance.
Colbert and his family have a long history with Brith Shalom. His parents became members shortly after moving to Houston in December 1966, and his mother became editor of the Brith Shalom Bulletin. When Colbert joined them in Houston the next summer after graduating high school in St. Paul, Minn., he became Brith Shalom’s youth director. His wife, Cantor Sharon Colbert, also edited the bulletin and served as president of the choir and as cantorial soloist before becoming an ordained cantor. Their son, Nathan, who became a Bar Mitzvah at Brith Shalom, is a professional photographer in Houston.
Preregistration for the program is requested. Tickets may be reserved online or via cash or check (made out to Congregation Brith Shalom). To reserve online, go to brithshalom.org/event/hazak-july.html.
The entire community is welcome. Stay for a nosh with friends.
