This buttery Garlic Herb Rice Pilaf Recipe is fluffy, full of flavor and ready in just 20 minutes.
We love pairing this aromatic rice side dish with baked chicken, roasted turkey, or a nice beef tenderloin.
When it comes to grains that my family can’t get enough of, it’s rice. We have rice at least three to four times a week, so I’ve become somewhat of an expert at how to prepare it.
I’m teaming up with Land O’Lakes to share this amazing and quick rice recipe that’s bursting with flavor. It’s seriously SO easy, you’ll be shocked!
Garlic Herb Rice Recipe
This buttery side of rice is just a handful of ingredients and only takes about 20 minutes to make from scratch.
Let’s get going! Here’s what you’ll need…
Garlic Herb Rice Pilaf Ingredients –
- Land O Lakes® Butter with Olive Oil & Sea Salt
- Jasmine Rice – a long grain variety of white rice
- Garlic Salt
- Dried Rosemary
- Dried Thyme
- Dried Parsley
- Chicken Broth – you could also use vegetable broth or water if you’re in a pinch
How To Cook Rice (the best way)
Over the years I’ve learned a few tricks to make the BEST rice.
It’s really quite easy as long as you follow these simple steps…
- RINSE THE RICE – when working with Jasmine rice you need to rinse the rice in a fine mesh strainer under cool water until the water runs clear. This will remove any excess starches in the rice, and help your rice have a nice fluffy texture as opposed to a sticky, gummy texture.
- TOAST RICE & SPICES – to bring out the most flavor and best texture in the rice, toast the rice and any herbs or spices in butter and oil (Land O Lakes® Butter with Olive Oil & Sea Salt is great for this!) before adding in the liquid.
- USE BROTH – using broth in place of water will add so much more flavor to the rice.
- BOIL THEN SIMMER – one of the biggest mistakes people make when cooking rice is to not bring the mixture to a BOIL before reducing the heat to a simmer and covering. Bringing it to a boil first will ensure your rice cooks quickly and efficiently.

I always love your recipes. This rice is also delicious next day with small cup of chopped pineapple and two tablespoons of soy sauce.

Hi Shawn
I made this rice today. I used 1.5 cup rice and 3 cups broth. I prepared as per your instructions, but the rice came out kind of wet and clumpy, not fluffy at all. I used a 2 quart pot. Any thoughts as to why it didn’t come out right?
Shawn
Hi Shelley, it could be a couple things…
1. Did you use Jasmine rice? The ratio for Jasmine rice is 1:2, but the ratio for Basmati rice is more like 1:1.5. So there would be a lot of extra liquid in that case.
2. I think a 2 quart should typically be fine to cook the rice in, but maybe next time try a 3 quart pot so it has more surface area to cook more evenly.
Hope that helps!
Mary Beth
Too much broth. Jasmine doesn’t need as much broth as Basmati (Which I prefer).

I always enjoy rice pilaf, decide to explore this one due to the garlic, always like garlic recipes, the more the better, at any rate I used 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, and evoo to compensate, peeled back the lid on the garlic powder and added at least a tablespoon, pinch of salt, followed the rest accordingly, simmered 20 minutes, last time this type of method cook time used 15 minutes not enough rice still crunchy uncooked, 20 minutes perfect, flavor taste great. This is a keeper!

Shawn, your recipe is so easy & so delicious, thank you! I’ve made it several times now & it’s so fun playing around with different spices. I didn’t have the olive oil & seasalt butter but plan on picking some up next grocery trip. I keep land o lakes garlic & herb butter on hand – it worked great! I cheated & used my instant pot to toast & then cook the rice – yum!!!
Shawn
I love that!! Thanks for sharing Jan!
Anna
Will this work in a rice cooker or IP too?
Shawn
The ratio of water to rice is different in the instant pot/rice cooker. I haven’t tested this recipe in there yet to be sure, but if you do, let us know how it turns out!
