Sketchy verification & discrimination
This November 2024, I’m celebrating my 11th year in business, a minority- and female-owned establishment that buys wholesale from, and openly supports, local businesses. You’d think Google would support businesses like mine. Wrong. My business has been listed on Google for years. Since Google began its “verification” process this year, they have unverified my business. Twice. I’m only allowed to video record using only their system. I get verified. Then unverified. Then I submit a video again only to get unverified in just a couple of weeks. I’ve called and emailed Google both in the US and UK (because the US office keeps hanging up). Not only is Google pending all my uploaded image files of our current location and blocking our kind replies to our reviews, Google found a pic of moving boxes with greenery that we posted only on Facebook during our relocation last year and posted it as one of our images! I’m taking a screenshot of this review for evidence because I feel discriminated by Google. My clients and others agree. It’s becoming clear why countries are suing Google for improper practices.
Gemini advanced
For the first half of the year 2024, it gave information that favored one political party. After repeatedly asking it for just the facts and not an opinion, it would simply apologize and then give the facts. For the last half of the year now, it will not give any political information whatsoever. If you ask any information about any political party or individual, or even the date of the US election, it will simply say: "I can't help with responses on elections and political figures right now. I'm trained to be as accurate as possible, but I can make mistakes sometimes. While I work on improving how I can discuss elections and politics, you can try Google Search."
It’s quite obvious they were getting backlash because the system was programmed to not just promote the Republican Party, but to show favoritism towards Trump. Instead of fixing the problem and just giving facts, someone decided just not to answer any political questions anymore. It’s definitely not worth $20 a month when they can adjust the information you receive or not answer it at all.
Socratic
I have used the Socratic app for four years to help with schoolwork. It’s straightforward to use and answers questions within seconds of taking a photo. Today, while working on homework, I went into Socratic. The app told me they had moved to Google, I didn’t think much and downloaded the app. Trying to find where Socratic went in the Google app, I realized it is now “Google Lens.” I started to use Google Lens, and I truly hated the experience. It doesn’t give you a straight answer like Socratic did. You have to go to each website to look for the answer. Socratic will show you the answer with the website attached. The process for taking a timed homework assignment has been extended due to this change. Socratic was perfect and did everything most college or even high school students need. Fast answers with the website attached was perfect. If they had to search for the answer on the websites, all Google Lens does is write the question in the search bar. Now I had to delete Socratic (rip) and delete Google to download chat GPT. Besides Socratic, Google is a great search engine for everyday use but ruined a great app that helped tons of students.
