I know you were part of the stream, but the juiciness of the game was just excellent. The pace and chaotic nature was very enjoyable. The main complaint I had was lack of enemy types to keep things interesting. It was a fun button masher for sure:

The visual effects are amazing and with a very fast pace! Nice work!

If the theme was combat and visuals....this hands down wins. Excellent concept and great mechanics included. The closest target camera, the combos, the fighting in general were all excellent. Very nice job and the visuals were just spot on.

Remind me of shotgun king, but this is the real-time, melee version. Gorgeous visuals and VFXs.

You really did an amazing job with the animation! It's visually stunning!

But I have to say, that I just had to mash to get through most of the waves.

Great job overall!

Neat idea. I really liked the way that pieces move, rotate, flip and wobble through the movement and combos. I think the hit stop and vfx make the combat really pop.

After a few minutes, I did find that I was able to button mash my way through most fights. You definitely get hit sometimes, but you also heal enough to where you don't have to think much about defensive play. My suggestion would be to look at games that encourage a switch off between offensive and defensive play, like Furi, Ruiner, Hollow Knight, Sekiro, Ghost of Tsushima. Defensive play can simply mean moving around more rather than spamming attack, or it can mean running away from the fight / blocking / hiding.

It would also be awesome to have some kind of super duper slo mo mode where you build up a meter and then use the meter to make all enemies move in slo mo and allow you to zip around the battlefield and demolish every enemy.

I was kind of hoping that there would be some crossover between the combat gameplay and actual chess, not just in visual design. I think you did a phenomenal job on the combat for a game jam though, regardless of my criticisms I did really enjoy my playthrough.

Developer(+1)

There is some crossover between chess and this game, being that the movesets of the different pieces are based off the movesets of pieces in chess, like knight will jump in an L shape, bishop moves diagonally towards the opponent, and rook will fire straight shots to you.

The game used to be a lot harder so that mindless spamming would just get you killed but early playtesters found the game too hard so I made healing way stronger like an hour before the jam ended

Oh I see, that's super cool. I still do wish that there was more a mechanical or gameplay connection, but I think that's super impressive that you base it on how the chess pieces move.

I think it's totally fair to make your game more accessible, its more important to avoid making a hard game, so I get it. I'm interested to see where you take the difficulty and challenge going forward. I'm rsaamar on the discord, feel free to shoot me a message if you have another playtest build.

I really like the theme, visuals and action gameplay of your entry, however it suffers from being flooded by effects making it hard to tell what's going on the screen, especially at the higher levels.
To solve it maybe make them less bigger or less brighter.

Also might be nicer if there's a dedicated button for certain actions like dodging/dashing or shooting to give the player more control, making it very clear what moves they're doing.

But aside from the things above, it's definitely a fun game with creative concept! You have talent for action games, keep it going! 😄

Audio-Visually it is a marvelous work. It looks like the author really know what to do to make good combat game. I had a feeling of playing the strangest fighting game in arcade. The idea of battling chess pieces is so riddiculus it works.

I had a lot of fun with trying to figure out how combo system works.

The biggest sin of this game is that it doesn't have a gamepad support.

everything is good for  9 day game dev, its will be better if have some item that player can pick up when killed enemy. But i didnt see the theme of this game jam :<

This game is very spicy looking and full of effects. Sometime it gets too much and I can't focus, but its fine.

I don't find this fit the theme much. Even if the page description say so I still don't change my mind. I find this very slothful interpretation from the theme. I had this though like "wait. the theme and the game I've played has nothing about the theme." after I had to rate the game.

The game itself is a fighting game and it looks as cool as most fighting game. I do really enjoy this. Very nice job.

Developer

Yeah im not sure what I was thinking exactly but when I saw the theme I instantly thought of fighting games....

Wow really fun game and its looks so good!

The gameplay feels so good, i really enjoy it! I love chess but now a love it more haha

This game was a lot of fun! I really enjoyed the visual feedbacks from hitting enemies, the music playing, and ui you have at the start. I also enjoyed having to face the mighty Knight, Rook, and Bishop, but the Rook being a long range unit rather than the bishop caught me off guard in a good way. In addition, it was interesting having the rook be a great asset to the King to maneuver through rough situations and to shoot range attacks. Level 2 and 3 I wasn't able to beat yet due to how challenging it is, but my highest combo score is 67.

Developer(+1)

Some fun trivia, originally the rook was in place of the bishop since people call the bishop the "sniper" sometimes in chess, but then I realized that the way the rook moved was diagonally in the game which made no sense so I switched it out for the bishop. It still make some sense since the rook is called the "cannon" in other languages

Submitted

Ah that make sense, the rook will definitely be off putting if it was moving diagonally. I originally view the rook as a fortress or last line of defense, but the game convey the rook in a more intriguing way considering how you mentioned it being called "cannon" in other languages. None the less great game and if you decide to develop it further, I wonder what the queen will do lol

Wow that was fun to play. Would probably wear my welding helmet if I was going to sit down for half an hour though. Very bright effects. Great feedback, addictive mechanic.

Very Good visuals and animations but it really didn't stick to the theme

Submitted

My fingers are numb from all the button mashing but it's worth it. The feedback for what the player does is Amazing and extremely beautiful to look at. Amazing game and would totally recommend.

Super super juicy effects and animations, really loved the game feel of this! I didn't feel like I could be very strategic with my skills and ended up treating every enemy the same (mashing random buttons until they died), but nevertheless, I enjoyed the process of doing it.

Never thought I needed god of war with chess pieces until now. Very fun and has great visual flair.

Maybe I just didn't find the secret to chaining combos, but it just felt like a crazy button masher to me. Perhaps a tutorial showing some combos would've been good. The game looks gorgeous, although there were moments where there were huge flashes or camera swings that took me out of the action. It's probably not my style of game. Still, it's a very interesting and ambitious idea.
