Driver License/State Identification Card
North Carolina Driver License
To get a North Carolina driver license, an individual must be at least 18 years old and apply in person at a N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles driver license office. It is recommended to make an appointment before going to the office.
Applicants must complete the following tests:
- Required Knowledge
- Road sign recognition
- Vision and driving tests
International students and scholars should take the following documents to the DMV when applying for the driver’s license:
- Passport
- Visa stamp
- Most recent Form I-94 (download from the CBP website)
- Proof of residency in North Carolina
- Proof of liability insurance
- Driver license fee ($5.50 per year)
Note: A social security number is not required to apply for a driver license or state identification card.
North Carolina State ID card
The State ID card is issued by the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles. This card does not allow an individual to drive a car in the U.S. but may only be used as a form of identification.
International students and scholars should take the following documents to the DMV when applying for the state ID:
- Passport
- Visa stamp
- Most recent Form I-94 (download from the CBP website)
- Proof of residency in North Carolina
- Fee of $14
Note: A social security number is not required to apply for a driver license or state identification card.
