Establishing novel antiviral tools capable of preventing or treating Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), and Mayaro virus (MAYV) infections are needed. The use of plant-based compounds that affect the replication cycles of these viruses has been proposed as a promising strategy. Chiococca alba (L.) Hitchc. is a neotropical plant used by Yucatec Mayas traditional healers, mainly, as antipyretic and antirheumatic. To evaluate the potential of C. alba methanolic extracts against CHIKV and MAYV through preliminary analysis in vitro and in silico. Abstract The use of botanical fungicides has been presented as a promising tool to replace the us... more Abstract The use of botanical fungicides has been presented as a promising tool to replace the use of synthetic compounds, as the former seems to offer reduced risks to the environment and human health. Here, we characterized the major constituents and evaluated the potential of essential oils of Noni, Morinda citrifolia L. plants for controlling stem-rot disease caused by the fungus Sclerotium rolfsii Catt in Neotropical rice, Oryza sativa L., fields. Using in silico molecular predictions and toxicological approaches, we further assessed the essential oil selectivity against beneficial organisms such as the fungi Trichoderma asperellum Samuels, Lieckfeldt & Nirenbeand the ladybeetles Eriopis connexa Germar and Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer. Our results revealed that octanoic acid (64.0 %), butanoic acid (10.2 %), and hexanoic acid (8.6 %) were the major oil components. When applied at 30 mg/mL, the essential oil inhibited mycelial growth, whereas at 10 mg/mL, it inhibited the germination of all S. rolfsii sclerotia. The essential oil application at 25 mg/mL reduced disease severity in both curative (56.4 %) and preventive (71.2 %) methods. Essential oil applications (30 mg/mL) did not affect the beneficial fungus T. asperellum nor did it kill any ladybeetle. Our molecular docking analyses reinforced the essential oil selectivity actions predicting higher potential interactions between its major components and the tyrosine-tRNA ligase of S. rolfsii compared to those of T. asperellum. Collectively, our findings demonstrated that Noni essential oil could control S. rolfsii infestations without causing any detrimental effects on relevant beneficial organisms, highlighting its potential as an alternative fungicide.

Dessa forma, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do fogo em duas fisionomias do bioma Cerrado sobre a superacao de dormencia e estimulacao da germinacao das sementes de tres especies do Cerrado Byrsonimacrassifolia (L.) Kunth, Enterolobiumcontortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong e Anadenanthera peregrina (L.) Speg. As sementes das tres especies testadas foram expostas ao contato direto com o fogo em ambiente natural (cerrado sensu stricto) e (cerradao), numa parcela de 1m x 1m. Para cada tratamento foram utilizadas 40 sementes de cada especie, divididas em dois blocos, sob uso do fogo nas duas diferentes fisionomias do cerrado, alem do tratamento testemunha (sem influencia do fogo). In this chapter, we address the practices of family life education in the context of Saudi Arabia... more In this chapter, we address the practices of family life education in the context of Saudi Arabia. We start by providing an overview of the Saudi social context, including the important historical and economic events that shaped the country and the influence of sociohistorical events on family dynamics. Then, we consider current Saudi family demographics, and utilizing Geert Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theoretical model, we examine important cultural characteristics of Saudi families and their needs. Next, we describe the development of Saudi family life education, providers, implementation, and the available evaluation research. By showing the practice of family life education in the Saudi context, this chapter highlights the importance of evidence-based FLE practices that seem to be missing. Finally, we provide recommendations for future practice.

Portanto, objetivou-se o desenvolvimento de produtos com leite de cabra em sua formulacao, em prol da otimizacao e aproveitamento do leite caprino oriundo do semiarido cearense, incrementando o consumo de subprodutos que o contenham. Foram produzidos queijos tipo frescal e iogurte com diferentes percentuais de leite caprino e bovino. Quanto a intencao de compra do queijo, observou-se similaridade entre as formulacoes avaliadas (P>0,05) com media de 3,95, exceto ao ser avaliado o tempo de armazenamento. Information presented in this chapter addresses the cultural practices of parenting in the contex... more Information presented in this chapter addresses the cultural practices of parenting in the context of Saudi Arabia. This chapter starts with an overview of the historical and sociocultural context of the country. Family values and traditions are a central organizing part of the Saudi family. Values such as religion and the family-oriented culture are especially important in shaping the parenting practices. Bandura’s social learning theory and Bem’s gender schema perspectives are the theoretical foundation of this chapter. This chapter presents gender-role modeling as one of the parenting practices in Saudi Arabia and explains two of the desirable child outcomes, namely, Al-Birr (obedience to the parents’ orders) and Al-Wali (a male who provides protection to his family, especially females, children, and the elderly). O objetivo do estudo é analisar a percepção de produtores de leite do município de Vilhena, situa... more O objetivo do estudo é analisar a percepção de produtores de leite do município de Vilhena, situado no Cone Sul de Rondônia, sobre qualidade e estilo de vida. A pesquisa, com perfil quali-quantitativo e de corte transversal, foi realizada com 42 produtores de leite (19 mulheres e 23 homens). Foi avaliada a qualidade de vida, com a utilização do instrumento Whoqol-bref e o estilo de vida, com a utilização do questionário do pentáculo do bem-estar. A média dos escores de qualidade de vida no domínio físico foi de 54,9 ±12,3; domínio psicológico 62,5 ±17,5; domínio social 59,3 ±19,1; domínio ambiental 55,1 ±14,3. Já os cinco componentes do estilo de vida tiveram os seguintes escores: alimentação 1,5 ±05; atividade física 2,1 ±0,7; comportamento preventivo 1,8 ±0,5; relacionamentos 1,9 ±0,6; controle do estresse 1,8 ±0,6. Abstract Due to the production facilities and great functionalities, the starch extracted from Ca... more Abstract Due to the production facilities and great functionalities, the starch extracted from Cassava plants' (Manihot esculenta Crantz) roots is one of the most abundant and inexpensive raw materials used in food- and non-food industries. The utilization of starches to encapsulate plant essential oils is a relevant advance in the control of insect pests, including mosquitoes that transmit human diseases. The starch-based microencapsulation of essential oils reduces the degradation and volatilization of active components, providing more sustainable and environmentally friendly activities. Here, we investigated the potential of cassava-based starch microparticle preparations containing the essential oil of a Neotropical plant (Siparuna guianensis Aublet) to control larvae of Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus. Moreover, the selectivity of the most efficient microparticles preparation was evaluated on zebrafish embryos (Danio rerio), an aquatic non-target organism. The characterization of encapsulated microparticles was achieved by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Our results revealed an encapsulation efficiency of 82.8 % to 95.3 %, with an average particle diameter of 8.56 μm. Cassava starch microencapsulation reduced the essential oil degradation and enhanced (up to 8 days) the persistent lethal activities (over 50 %) against both species' mosquito larvae compared to the pure essential oil. Furthermore, the exposure of aquatic non-target organisms (embryos of D. rerio) revealed these microparticles' adequate selectivity. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that cassava starch-based microparticles exhibit promising functionality as carriers for essential oils with mosquitocidal activities.

Objetivo: Compreender a percepção de uma equipe de enfermagem de um Centro de Parto Normal acerca... more Objetivo: Compreender a percepção de uma equipe de enfermagem de um Centro de Parto Normal acerca da assistência ao parto humanizado. Método: Trata-se de uma pesquisa descritiva, qualitativa, realizada com profissionais de enfermagem de um Centro de Parto Normal, em um município do interior do Ceará. Os dados foram analisados segundo a análise categorial temática, utilizando-se o software IRAMUTEQ para processamento dos dados. Resultados: Os participantes do estudo reconhecem a relevância de seu trabalho e identificam a classe da enfermagem como protagonista na assistência humanizada. Esses apresentam a percepção de parto humanizado relacionado à autonomia da mulher, além disso, entendem que o processo de humanização se inicia desde a entrada da mulher no centro de parto. Conclusão: Os profissionais de enfermagem demonstraram conhecimento científico sobre a assistência ao parto humanizado e sobre as práticas de humanização para a parturiente.Descritores: Parto humanizado; Cuidados ...

O desenvolvimento do jogo foi baseado em jogos de RPG, de forma que o jogador controla um personagem e a partir de batalhas é possível invocar criaturas e controlar suas açõees utilizando comandos baseado na linguagem JAVA. O jogo foi elaborado e avaliado no contexto da disciplina de Introdução ao Desenvolvimento de Jogos de um curso de Engenharia de Software, seguindo uma metodologia para o desenvolvimento de jogos. Os resultados da avaliação do POOGame indicaram evidências de que o jogo contribui para o aprendizado de POO.

Abstract The increasing prevalence of resistance to conventional antibiotics in pathogenic bacter... more Abstract The increasing prevalence of resistance to conventional antibiotics in pathogenic bacteria has demanded faster development of novel sources of antibacterial agents. In this context, biological activities shown by natural compounds have received particular attention. One of the alleged backslashes for these alternative bactericidal tools is the current knowledge gap regarding their action mechanisms. Here, we evaluated the activity of essential oil extracted of Negramina, Siparuna guianensis, plants against pathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus pyogenes. We evaluated cytotoxic effects on bacterial cells and the action mechanisms of the essential oil. The gas chromatography analysis revealed that β-Myrcene (39.68%), epicurzerenone (18.16%) and germacrenes D (14.34%) and B (2.93%) are the major components of the S. guianensis essential oil. Interestingly, the essential oil exhibited toxicity against all pathogenic bacteria without affecting the human monocytic THP-1 cell line. This antibacterial activity resulted from strong bacterial growth inhibition and deregulation of bacterial cell wall permeability with increased nucleotides and K+ ions leakage. Furthermore, our molecular docking predictions indicated high affinity between some essential oil major components Germacrene B and active sites of bacterial DNA and RNA polymerases, which indicates possible impairments on the pathogenic bacteria cell replication processes.
