Despite the increasing popularity of this augmented reality game, to date, no studies have investigated passion for playing Pokémon Go. On the theoretical basis of the Dualistic Model of Passion (DMP), our goal was to investigate the associations between Pokémon Go playing motives, passion, and impulsivity. A total of 621 Pokémon Go players participated in the study (54.9% female; M age = 22.6 years, SD age = 4.4). It was found that impulsivity was more strongly associated with obsessive passion (OP) than with harmonious passion (HP). HP was associated with adaptive motives (i.e., outdoor activity, social, recreation, and nostalgia), while OP was associated with less adaptive motives (i.e., fantasy, escape, boredom, competition, and coping). Therefore, in line with the DMP, HP and OP for playing Pokémon Go can predict an almost perfectly distinguished set of adaptive or maladaptive playing motives, and OP has a noteworthy relationship with impulsivity as a determinant.

Drawing from the literature on passionate activities, sexual passion was defined in terms of its intrapersonal motivational and cognitive components and examined from a dualistic perspective. More specifically, in 5 studies, we investigated how 2 types of sexual passion, harmonious and obsessive, can lead to clearly distinct subjective, relational, and cognitive outcomes. Study 1 validated a scale measuring harmonious and obsessive sexual passion, and showed that each type of sexual passion leads to common, but also distinct, subjective consequences during sexual activity engagement for both singles and romantically engaged individuals. Studies 2 and 3 differentiated the constructs of harmonious and obsessive sexual passion from competing constructs existing in the literature and provided evidence for its predictive validity regarding various relational outcome...

The chapter focuses on the applicability of passion within sport, and key research findings are woven throughout their review of the relevant theories. Future research directions on passion in sport are presented, along with practical implications for developing passion for sport. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)

Overall, job recognition and control resulted in more burnout for employees with poor-quality work motivation (high controlled or low autonomous motivation). These results suggest that poor-quality motivation renders employees more vulnerable to certain resources in their work environment, as these job characteristics stimulate compensatory behaviours (e.g., overinvesting in one's job to boost one's sense of self-worth or to obtain others' approval), leading to energy depletion over time.

Two studies were conducted to translate and validate this new measure in English. The Sport Motivation Scale (SMS) consists of seven subscales that measure three types of Intrinsic Motivation (IM; IM to Know, IM to Accomplish Things, and IM to Experience Stimulation), three forms of regulation for Extrinsic Motivation (Identified, Introjected, and External), and Amotivation. The first study confirmed the factor structure of the scale and revealed a satisfactory level of internal consistency. Correlations among the subscales revealed a simplex pattern confirming the self-determination continuum and the construct validity of the scale. Gender differences were similar to those obtained with the French-Canadian version. The more self-determined forms of motivation were associated with more positive responses on related consequences. In a second study, the SMS was...

In Study 1, a secure attachment style was positively, and an avoidant attachment style negatively, associated with harmonious passion. Moreover, secure and anxious attachment styles were positively related to obsessive passion. In Study 2, we replicated and extended these findings by demonstrating that harmonious and obsessive passions positively predicted the use of adaptive and maladaptive conflict resolution strategies, respectively. In Study 3, results of Study 2 were replicated over time providing us with some information concerning the direction of the relationships among attachment, romantic passion, and conflict resolution strategies. Overall, the present results suggest that attachment styles are a determinant of romantic passion and that romantic passion mediates the relationships between attachment styles and the use of adaptive and maladaptive conflict resolution strategies.

The purpose of this research was to test if emotional reactivity following athletic successes and failures was related to one's levels of HP and OP for sport. The authors recruited recreational golfers (N = 115) to report how they typically felt after they experienced successes and failures on the golf course. Results of multilevel modeling analyses supported the hypotheses and revealed that OP moderated the effects of success and failure on both positive and negative affect: OP was associated with higher levels of positive affect following success, as well as higher levels of negative affect following failure. These results suggest that OP, but not HP, is associated with greater emotional reactivity to the experience of success and failure in sport.

Obsessive passion predicts problematic screen-based activity outcomes. Harmonious passion is related to adaptive screen-based activity outcomes. Impulsivity can be a key personality variable of the Dualistic Model of Passion.

Self-determined motivation was hypothesized to predict coping strategies and the response to assessment-related stress, and coping was hypothesized to play a considerable role in short-and long-term outcomes of assessment. We examined this model using multiple group path analysis in Mplus. In Study 1 (N = 265), music students' use of engagement-coping strategies led to stronger musical career intentions, while disengagement-coping strategies led to weaker intentions. In Study 2 (N = 340), students' increased use of engagement coping, and decreased use of disengagement coping strategies led to higher grades, higher positive affect and lower negative affect. In both studies, engagement and disengagement-coping were predicted by autonomous and controlled motivation, respectively. Motivation also indirectly predicted academic outcomes through stress appraisal and coping. While women experienced higher levels of stress, men were more negatively affected by the use of disengagement-oriented coping. Gender differences were also found on the links between engagement-oriented coping and outcomes. These results fill an important gap in the literature regarding gender differences in the outcomes coping in education, as well as contributing to a better understanding of the processes linking motivation, coping and academic outcomes.

While passion has been widely analyzed from a dualistic position, studies on persistence have rarely been focused on persistence regarding its quality. Thus, the aim of this study was twofold. Firstly, it aimed to analyze the relationships between flexible and rigid persistence, harmonious and obsessive passion, subjective vitality, and intention to stay in a sample of 201 university teachers from 20 universities. The secondary goal was to translate and assess the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Flexible and Rigid Persistence Scale. Overall, the findings supported the hypotheses tested. Regarding the first aim, we tested a structural equation model in which we hypothesized that harmonious passion would positively lead to flexible persistence and, to a lesser degree, to rigid persistence, and that obsessive passion would positively predict r...

The present study employed the Dualistic Model of Passion to investigate whether harmonious passion (i.e., passionate engagement that is healthily balanced with other life activities) predicts positive music listening experiences and/or psychological well-being in fans of violently themed music. We also investigated whether obsessive passion (i.e., uncontrollable passionate engagement with an activity) predicts negative music listening experiences and/or psychological ill-being. Fans of violently themed music (N = 177) completed the passion scale, scale of positive and negative affective experiences, and various psychological well- and ill-being measures. As hypothesised, harmonious passion for violently themed music significantly predicted positive affective ...

Research has uncovered important factors that may affect one's use of emotion regulation strategies. Because passionate individuals experience positive and negative emotions while engaging in the activity that they deeply care about (Vallerand in The psychology of passion: a dualistic model, Oxford University Press, New York, 2015), it was proposed that they should be more likely to make use of emotion regulation strategies. Using the Dualistic Model of Passion (Vallerand et al. in

Based on the dualistic model of passion, the present research sought to test the hypothesis that harmonious passion, more than obsessive passion, triggers a higher use of integrated temporal positivity that, in turn, leads to one crucial type of sport performance, namely last-second performance. The results of 3 studies conducted with team-sport athletes (Study 1,n = 625; Study 2,n = 285; and Study 3,n = 263) provided clear support for the hypothesis. The results pave the way for future research focusing on the role of adaptive temporal processes in support of sport performance.
