The Hixikanwe Association in Maputo is a non-governmental community-based organization founded in 2006 by women living with HIV. It is now at the forefront of empowering women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Mozambique. With a vision of enabling people living with HIV to lead full, healthy lives free from discrimination, Hixikanwe has grown into a national network dedicated to providing comprehensive care and support.
The organization’s mission focuses on promoting the integrated care, human rights, and socio-economic development of people living with HIV, thereby improving their quality of life.
Areas of implementation
Hixikanwe started operating in Maputo city, but has expanded its activities to the provinces of Maputo, Inhambane, and Niassa, aiming to reach more vulnerable populations.
In partnership with Hivos’ We Lead program, Hixikanwe is supporting these communities in various ways, including HIV/AIDS prevention through Positive Prevention, support visits, and integrated care with nutritional support, referral services, and monitoring ART patients to ensure adherence to medication and retention in care.
“Hixikanwe helped me rebuild my life, providing support and food when I had none.” – Lola Xerinda.
The Association’s safe spaces for adolescents and young people living with HIV, particularly girls, provide psychosocial support through therapeutic circles and group therapies. Additionally, Hixikanwe works with orphans and vulnerable children, advocates for the sexual and reproductive rights of girls living with HIV, and promotes economic empowerment and community-led monitoring.
“Hixikanwe is more than an institution; it’s a safe space where everyone can find support, strength, and opportunities to transform their lives. Women and girls can share experiences, gain knowledge, and become leaders in their communities,” says Project Coordinator Wilzmarie Macau.
Impact
Through We Lead, Hixikanwe has directly benefited over 2,500 adolescent girls and young women aged 10 to 24, and more than 4,350 women aged 25 and above with its empowerment programs, awareness campaigns, and advocacy.
“The Association helped me accept my status and know my rights. Financial support from Hixikanwe transformed my life, allowing me to support my family and improve my living conditions.” – Rosita Mondlane, PLWHIV.
Women’s empowerment through resilience and solidarity
Hixikanwe’s work is closely aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 3 (Health and Well-being), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 10 (Reducing Inequalities). By focusing on girls and women, the Association is helping to break their cycles of poverty, reduce inequalities, and strengthen their participation in decision-making processes. The result is profound individual and collective transformations that enable women to lead change within their communities.
