Used Book Buy Back

Please Note: From Dec 21-23, we can only look at two bags of books per seller, as our used book buyers will be quite busy selling books.
We do not buy used books at all on 12/24 and 1/1/25.

Some Used Book Selling Guidelines

  • We only buy books at our 506 Clement St. location -- we do not buy books at Green Apple Books on the Park or Browser Books. Trade cannot be redeemed at Browser Books.

  • Our used book buy counter is open 10am - 6pm daily, except 12/24 and 1/1, which are the only two days of the year the buy counter is closed but the store is open (barring a staffing issue or emergency).

  • Our primary areas of interest are: Literature, Poetry, Art, Photography, Architecture, Design, Cookbooks, Natural History, San Francisco Bay Area/Central California History.

  • We never buy: Textbooks, CDs, LPs, staple-bound comics, periodicals, encyclopedias, computer books, dated reference material, ex-library books.

 

The 3 factors that determine what we buy & what we pay are demand, availability & condition:

  • Demand: what the demand we think there is for a given book IN OUR STORE.

  • Availability: how many copies of a book we have on hand or how often we see the book at our used book buy counter

  • Condition: we will not consider books that are underlined, highlighted, soiled or water-damaged;  we will not buy hardcover books that lack dust jackets.

 

Other details to note:

  • Books must be in boxes or bags.

  • We will not come to your car to go through your books.

  • We do not accept donations.  

  • If you’d like to bring in more than 5 bags or boxes of books, we’d encourage you to call ahead and ask to speak to a used book buyer.

  • We have no interest in antiquarian books–but a strong interest in collectible 20th/21st century titles in the following areas:  Beats, Black Mountain School,  New York School, Black Arts Movement, San Francisco Renaissance;   experimental visual and language arts.

  • We will occasionally travel to buy a large collection of books in demand that we do not ordinarily see at our used book buy counter.  Quality is more important than quantity.  If you have a large collection of books in our primary areas of interest, please email photos to [email protected] & we will review your collection for a possible house call.
