Beyond the Spider-Verse Has Found Some Familiar Directors

Into the Spider-Verse's Bob Persichetti returns to the co-director's chair with Justin K. Thompson for the third entry in the trilogy.

We’ve been hearing about the long road to the third animated Miles Morales movie, Beyond the Spider-Verse, for a similarly long time now—hell, it was meant to be out earlier this year. But now we know that it’s going to take even longer to swing back into its multiversal web, we at least know who’s going to be leading the charge behind the scenes.

Today Sony officially confirmed that Beyond will be helmed by Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson, two creative stalwarts who’ve been working on the Spider-Verse films since the beginning. Persichetti co-directed Into the Spider-Verse with Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, while Thompson served as the production designer on the original film, shaping its now-iconic visual style, stepping up to co-direct Across with Joaquim Dos Santos and Kemp Powers.

“Bob and Justin’s fingerprints are woven into the DNA of these films, and their passion for Miles’ journey shines through in every frame of his last adventure,” producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller said in a statement (via Deadline). “There is nothing more rewarding than collaborating with creative partners with bold vision and brilliant execution like Bob and Justin. We are thrilled to work with them once again to create a beautiful and satisfying conclusion to this story.”

It’s a story that has been a long time coming. First announced in 2021 alongside the sequel’s debut trailer—and originally as the Part 2 to its Part 1—after reports emerged about terrible working conditions on Across, as well as further reports alleging a drawn out restructuring of work on Beyond so far earlier this year, it now seems unlikely that we’ll see the movie swing into theaters for a few more years. Fingers crossed Persichetti and Thompson will make it worth the wait.
