Description
Commercial applications are ALL too expensive to even mention the price on the site. They are focused on standard sizes, not bespoke:
- Clo3d -- Korea, sister app Marvelous Designer for virtual only = $60/mo
- Browzwear -- Israel, lip service to turning supply chains around, but doesn't actually make software available to people
- Lectra -- France, "End-to-end solutions for the entire industry" 👎
- Assyst Bullmer -- UK
Wild:
- Nervous System Kinematics dress -- very tech-driven effort (pushing limits of laser-sintered vinyl). Softfab should showcase practical generative design, with widely-available technology (scissors, sewing machines!)
Open efforts:
- Valentina Project -- Inkscape family, strong tailor background
- Discussion on Valentina + Blender + MakeHuman
- Open Fit -- green tights → kinect → size → pattern → jeans
- "And the patterns and grading rules—the algorithms for sizing—used for mass-produced clothing are highly proprietary, built with software that can cost tens of thousands of dollars."
- "We're also really interested in exploring a 3D approach to pattern making that uses open source tools to create hyper-accurate meshes, and flattening them out, instead of the usual 2D approach which can have strange artifacts (poor fit) in edge cases." 👍
- Sketchpad14 -- Porting Sutherland's Sketchpad to HTML5! Could be worth trying to build some constraint-based designs in that.
How softfab can differentiate:
- web-based
- generative graphic design for Spoonflower fabric printing w/ cut lines (Constrvct does this, but not sized or DIY)
- tools to projection-map on (upcycled) fabric and cut in place
