this Centos machine had update issues, was fixed / updated earlier today, only now, after fix/update, running these:

I had the same issue. Did the pihole -d and the git steps above, and adminlte updated properly with the next pihole -up.

then repeated the git related steps in /etc/.pihole, same result - Pihole updated to the next version with pihole -up

I had the same issue and ran the suggested commands after I ran the sudo pihole -d.

cd /var/www/html/admin
sudo git status
sudo git remote -v
sudo git fetch
sudo git status
sudo git remote -v

However it still has not fixed the core pi-hole.

I was also experiencing this on CentOS Linux release 7.9.2009 (Core). Running the steps suggested by @dschaper, @coderkingnoob and @markwiater resolved the issue.

This is weird. The installer should have been able to handle this. Something looked odd in your debug log:

Confirmed on a debian system with git version 2.30.2 that these extra chars do not show up. I can only imagine it has something to do with this, but I don't have a centos system stuck on 5.7 to check this against!

How about a sudo git pull in /etc/.pihole? (and maybe even a try a repair after that.. pihole -r)

This did not fully work for me. It did pull an update from git, but did not fully solve it:

pihole -v
Pi-hole version is v5.8.1-5-g3260cb4 (Latest: v5.8.1)
AdminLTE version is v5.9 (Latest: v5.10.1)
FTL version is v5.13 (Latest: v5.13)

sudo rm -rf /etc/.pihole
git clone https://github.com/pi-hole/pi-hole /etc/.pihole
sudo rm -rf /var/www/html/admin
sudo git clone https://github.com/pi-hole/adminlte /var/www/html/admin

pihole -r # choose repair here

This DID work for me and I'm fully up to date now:
