Got ImageMagick.MagickDelegateErrorException while command gs ran successfully #1745

I use Magick.NET with ghoscript in linux container, working fine. I now try to build a distroless container image. And the same code stops working. There must be something wrong with my new container build, but I haven’t figured out the cause. I'm looking for any hints.

The test code is simple as following

MagickReadSettings settings = new MagickReadSettings{
    Density = new Density(150)
};
using var images = new MagickImageCollection();
images.Read("/app/test.pdf");

I got the following error when running that code in a container:

In the RelatedExceptions, I see following

ImageMagick.MagickConfigureWarningException: UnableToOpenConfigureFile `delegates.xml' @ warning/configure.c/GetConfigureOptions/722

Then I took the gs command printed in the stacktrace and ran it in the container (there are 2 -f arguments in the stacktrace, but I used only one -f in the gs command below):

gs -sstdout=%stderr -dQUIET -dSAFER -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -dNOPROMPT -dMaxBitmap=500000000 -dAlignToPixels=0 -dGridFitTT=2 '-sDEVICE=pngalpha' -dTextAlphaBits=4 -dGraphicsAlphaBits=4 '-r72x72' -dPrinted=false  '-sOutputFile=/tmp/magick-dnlO4YlYwGG_g7bPoEeOisAWq5ej1K3s%d' '-f/app/test.pdf'

There was no error, no message on the console. Then I removed the argument -dQUIET, I saw following in the console.

That means ghostscript ran OK.

That means that ghotscript was able in your path when you were in a shell in your container. I just asked copilot here if they had an explanation for exit code 32512 and they responded that this meant that the command was not found. Did you check if gs is available in the path of your application?

The command gs exists at /usr/local/bin/gs and /usr/local/bin is in the path. And can execute the docker container with --entrypoint gs (no absolute path). The following works

I've just turn on the detailed log events MagickNET.SetLogEvents(LogEvents.Detailed); and I saw that it stopped at following line

Looks like the problem is not due to gs path but due to the delegates.xml as seen in MagickDelegateErrorException.RelatedExceptions

There, it load the built-in configuration, does it come from Magick.Native-Q16-x64.dll.so?

Then I create a custom delegates.xml and map it to path /usr/local/share/doc/ImageMagick-7/delegates.xml inside the container. It worked. The file contains only one delegate for pdf decoder that I copy from file delegates.xml.in in the upstream ImageMagick source code tarball:

I guess Magick.NET expects some directories exist so that I can write its embedded delegates.xml file to. Can you think of any of these folders? I will have to create them in my image. Because it's a distroless image containing only resources that a program needs, including folders on the filesystem.

I don't understand why the built-in command from ImageMagick does not work in your situation. With your delegates.xml file you are doing the same but you are moving the configuration to an xml file.

Using @PSDelegate@ inside the delegates.xml file only works on Windows. On a Linux platform this value will not be replaced so you will need to change that to gs yourself.

With the ConfigurationFiles class you can take control over the content inside the xml configuration files. And with Magick.Initialize(IConfigurationFiles) you can initialize this library with those configuration files.
