A tutorial to use GUI in WSL2/WSLg replacing original Xorg by Xwayland, allowing WSL to work like native Linux, including login screen

Full desktop shell in WSL2 using WSLg (XWayland)

Note

If you want to use Wayland in WSLg in a simpler setup, you can try the WSLg (Wayland) tutorial.

In this tutorial, we will setup GUI in WSL2. No additional software outside WSL (like VcXsrv or GWSL) is required. You will find this tutorial very similar to the one that replaces Xorg with Xvnc. Indeed, it's pretty much the same tutorial, with some few changes.

The key component we need to install is the desktop metapackage you want (GNOME, KDE, Xfce, Budgie, etc), and after that, replace the default Xorg by a script that calls Xwayland instead.

For this setup, I will use Ubuntu 24.04, and install GNOME Desktop. Unfortunately older versions of Ubuntu lack some fundamental things, so we cannot reproduce it in older versions (at least not fully). Since the key components aren't bound to Ubuntu or GNOME, you can use your favorite distro and GUI. Check the [Sample screenshot

This skill guides creation of distinctive, production-grade frontend interfaces that avoid generic "AI slop" aesthetics. Implement real working code with exceptional attention to aesthetic details and creative choices.
The user provides frontend requirements: a component, page, application, or interface to build. They may include context about the purpose, audience, or technical constraints.

A deep dive into the iOS backup/restore system

Domains.plist

Documentation of /System/Library/Backup/Domains.plist. File taken from iOS 16.4 iPhone SE 3. The file was removed in iOS 17.0

Values

Values in the plist. Other than SystemDomains, these are not really important and are just here for preservation sake.

A domain in domains.plist contains keys that determine what gets backed up for what types of devices and where (i.e. iCloud vs iTunes). Not all domains have each key. The only 2 keys that must be in every domain are RootPath and RelativePathsToBackupAndRestore. Some domains have the value ShouldDigest. I am not sure exactly what it means but I have included it for documentation purposes.

  • Version: "24.0"
  • SystemDomains: (Dictionary), see below

Running passff on Windows and Firefox

How To run PassFF for Firefox on Windows

Getting it running on Windows is fairly simple, but the browser extension PassFF with its host script, PassFF host didn't work for me after running the installer install_host_app.bat file.

I found gopass which is a Go implementation of the original pass script, and seems to be 100% compatible.

Exploring Zotero Data Model for Direct Database Access

Exploring Zotero Data Model for Direct Database Access

This tutorial aims to provide technical information necessary for direct access to data stored in Zotero's local bibliographic database. The official documentation [mentions][Zotero Client Data Model] the present topic briefly, so I decided to post a more detailed discussion.

Zotero's local bibliographic database is an [SQLite][] database, the leading open-source relational database management system (RDBMS). Hence, direct access to this data necessitates basic familiarity with [relational databases][RDBMS] and [SQL][] (free SQL resources are readily available on the Internet, including the [official documentation][SQLite docs] focused on the SQLite SQL dialect and [this tutorial][SQLite SQL Tutorial]).
