On the 8th of April 2025 at the SAFe Summit in Sorrento, Italy, attendees heard from Andrew Sales, Chief Methodologist of SAFe, as he introduced some significant changes to the Framework as part of the ongoing work to “Reimagine SAFe.” These updates, which are summarised below, were in support of the key message from Andrew’s keynote:
The ability to solve real business problems IS the best measure of SAFe Success.
1. Telling the Story of the Lean-Agile Organization through the SAFe Disciplines
The 2025 State of SAFe Report’s number one request was to simplify the SAFe Framework. The simplified Big Picture, released last year, was an important step on this journey. However, a higher level of detail was always needed to support those who are implementing or practicing SAFe.
This additional guidance has now been released. An interactive graphic and a brand-new guidance article have been released for each of the following SAFe Disciplines.
- Lean Portfolio Management
- Large Solution Integration and Delivery
- Product Development Flow
- Team and Technical Agility
- Leadership and Culture
For the first time, they tell the end-to-end story in a simple and outcome-driven approach.
2. A New Approach to Solving Business Problems with Competencies
The biggest challenge any Framework faces is ensuring that it remains relevant and has up-to-date information on emerging ways of working. This challenge, and the need to demonstrate the ability to solve real business problems, requires a brand new approach to how SAFe helps individuals and organizations develop competencies.
New competency landing pages, accessible from within each SAFe Discipline, now follow a learning journey approach, with sections for learning, applying, and mastering techniques and practices. This structure also provides integrated access to videos and other resources from SAFe Studio. These updates are designed to meet those applying SAFe where they are at any given moment in their transformation journey. They center around business problems that can be resolved with the support of adopting SAFe practices.
As of today, the following competencies have been released, with more to follow iteratively, based on the most pressing business problems to solve.
The most important thing is that the number of competencies is not limited. Whatever competencies are required to solve the most important business problems will be added to the Framework. This model also supports strong collaboration with external experts such as Mirko Kleiner, who developed the Lean-Agile Procurement Competency, and Fabiola Eyholzer and Michael Stump, for the Transforming People Development Competency.
3. SAFe CoPilot Integration and Knowledge Base Access
The Framework site has also been updated with improved UI/UX and findability. SAFe CoPilot has been integrated into the Framework homepage to provide users with relevant information based on their questions. Additionally, users can now access the full SAFe Knowledge Base with a single click from the menu for the first time.

4. Three New Thought Leadership Assets
Additionally, Andrew announced the availability of three new thought leadership assets, which the community has highly requested.
The new thought leadership assets released are an executive guide on The Product Operating Model at Scale, the SAFe Explained eBook, and the 2025 State of SAFe Report.

The Product Operating Model at Scale serves as a valuable resource for individuals looking to understand the product model, those already using it but not experiencing success, and those uncertain about how SAFe complements a product model. The product model has the potential to transform your organization’s operations; however, successful implementation requires a solid Lean-Agile foundation. This executive guide addresses organizational challenges when adopting the product model and offers strategies to overcome them. Don’t miss out on this valuable resource.
