Iâm Sigal Samuel, a senior reporter for Future Perfect, Voxâs section about how to do good in todayâs confusing world. I write about what it means to live a good life at a time when so many things â from artificial intelligence to meditation headsets to psychedelic therapy â promise to make us into better humans, yet sometimes raise more questions than answers.
So Iâm launching an advice column â Your Mileage May Vary â to offer you a new framework for thinking through your ethical or philosophical questions. It publishes every other Sunday in the Future Perfect newsletter and on Vox.com. My non-traditional column will be based on value pluralism â the idea that each of us has multiple, equally important yet often conflicting moral values. When values clash, dilemmas arise.
When you write in with a dilemma, I wonât give you my answer; Iâll show you how to find your own. First, Iâll tease out the different values at stake in your question. Then Iâll show how wise people â from ancient philosophers to spiritual thinkers to modern scientists â have thought about these values and conflicts between them. Finally, Iâll guide you to decide which value you want to put more weight on. Only you can decide that; thatâs why the column is called Your Mileage May Vary.
So: What ethical dilemmas are keeping you up at night? Which philosophical or spiritual questions are plaguing you? Whether itâs about how you use tech or how you travel, what you eat, or what you teach your kids, Your Mileage May Vary can help!
