NIFA, Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program Foundational and Applied Science Program

This program supports grants in six AFRI priority areas to advance knowledge in both fundamental and applied sciences important to agriculture. The six priority areas are: Plant Health and Production and Plant Products; Animal Health and Production and Animal Products; Food Safety, Nutrition, and Health; Bioenergy, Natural Resources, and Environment; Agriculture Systems and Technology; and Agriculture Economics and Rural Communities. Research-only, extension-only, and integrated research, education and/or extension projects are solicited in this Request for Applications (RFA). Specific notes to our audience: There are several opportunities for Cooperative Extension within this grant program. Some examples are: Conference grants of $50K in several priority areas, Climate Hub Partnerships up to $1M, Environmental Justice grants up to $1M for youth engagement, and Rapid Response to Extreme Weather.
Notice of Intent (NOI) to Issue Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) Advanced Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies to Drive National Decarbonization

Award ceiling: $10,000,000
This NOFO supports the vision outlined in the U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap: affordable clean hydrogen for a net-zero carbon future and a sustainable, resilient, and equitable economy. The NOFO will target research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) topics critical to scaling hydrogen infrastructure and enabling increased adoption of clean hydrogen across sectors, particularly in heavy-duty (HD) vehicles and other heavy-duty transportation applications, which supports the U.S. National Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonization.

This Announcement seeks to identify applicant organizations that propose to host and, as applicable, serve as consortium partners for a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Climate Adaptation Science Center (CASC) in the regions indicated below, and to determine if their proposed science, partnership, and program support activities and strategies are appropriate to serve in the following roles:Northeast, Pacific Islands, and South Central Climate Adaptation Science Centers.
National Endowment for the Humanities, Awards for Faculty Institutional Support – HBCUs and TCUs
Due: February 3, 2025
Award Ceiling: $30,000
This program strengthens the capacity of HBCUs and TCUs to support humanities research on their campuses through funding for replacement instructors. NEH will provide funding at a fixed rate of $2,500 per month (full-time equivalent), up to $30,000.
Eligibility note: This limited competition supports institutions that have one or more faculty or staff member(s) who have been awarded an NEH Awards for Faculty at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) or an NEH Awards for Faculty at Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCU) fellowship in federal fiscal year 2025.

NIFA, Rapid Response to Extreme Weather Events Across Food and Agricultural Systems
Due: Rolling basis
Maximum award: $300,000
All applications must directly address 1) effects associated with an extreme weather event or disaster and 2) one or more of the following emphasis areas: Agroecosystem Resilience; Food Safety, Nutrition Security, and Agricultural Commodity Security; Health, Well-Being, and Safety

Environmental and Climate Justice Community Change Grants Program
Due: Rolling applications, first review in March, 2024; accepting applications until November 21, 2024
An unprecedented $2 billion in grants, the Community Change Grants will fund community-driven projects that address climate challenges and reduce pollution while strengthening communities through thoughtful implementation. This historic level of support will enable communities and their partners to overcome longstanding environmental challenges and implement meaningful solutions to meet community needs now and for generations to come.
