Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders is 'so cheesy'

According to Law & Order True Crime‘s Detective Zoeller, the story of the Menendez brothers has everything: “Guns, pills, and money.” Oh, and wigs.

What it doesn’t have, argues EW’s Bingeworthy hosts, is a “spark.”

“It just seemed so cheesy,” said co-host Jessica Shaw, “And it felt beneath them. Like, you should be able to do this better.”

Co-host Touré goes on to agree with her, explaining that, “There’s something compelling in the actual Menendez brothers’ story. But in this telling, it’s not gripping. It’s not complex.”

In 1989, Jose and Kitty Menendez were murdered in their Beverly Hills home by their two sons, Erik and Lyle Menendez. Helmed by Dick Wolf, the NBC true-crime series comes hot on the heels of Ryan Murphy’s Emmy-winning The People vs. O.J. Simpson — and Shaw and Touré can’t help but draw comparisons.

“[The People vs. O.J. Simpson] was a compelling retelling,” says Touré. “I don’t need this retelling, I’m good.”
