Movies Mattel apologizes after fans discover Wicked dolls link to porn website: 'We deeply regret this unfortunate error' That web address wasn't changed for the better. By Shania Russell and Sara Netzley Published on November 10, 2024 07:34PM EST Comments A few missing keystrokes turned out to be a horse of different color for Wicked fans who picked up dolls based on the upcoming big-screen adaptation of the popular 2003 Broadway musical. The URL on the boxes of Mattel’s Elphaba and Glinda dolls directed fans, not to information about the film starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, but to a pornographic website by the same name. The toy company has since issued an apology. Ariana Granda is Glinda and Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba in WICKED. Universal Pictures "Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls, primarily sold in the U.S., which intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page,” said a statement from Mattel obtained by Entertainment Weekly. “We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this. Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children.” The statement added, “Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information.” Cynthia Erivo was glad Ariana Grande got Wicked role: 'It was not the two ladies that I was auditioning with' The adult film site at Wicked.com, which appears on the packaging, is for Wicked Pictures, which produces "quality parody porn movies" like Black Widow XXX and Captain Marvel XXX: An Axel Braun Parody, according to the site. Before the misprint was discovered, Erivo and Grande appeared in an Instagram post exclaiming in delight over their tiny doppelgangers. As has been the case in the promotional run-up to the film’s release, Erivo was decked out in power green, while Grande was pretty in pink. The splashy Jon M. Chu-directed film adaptation also stars Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. Prior to the release of the dolls, the film’s only brush with X-rated content came courtesy of Bridgerton star Bailey, who found himself with only the footwear for his costume in the early days of filming. Naturally, he made the best of it. “There's an amazing photo that no one's ever gonna see of me in nothing but my boots, which sort of felt right for Fiyero somehow,” Bailey joked. Wicked first reactions call film a 'musical masterpiece,' praise Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande At the 2023 CinemaCon, Chu promised an epic moviegoing experience. “This movie has everything: giant musical numbers, big action pieces. And using a classic story you all know, The Wizard of Oz,” he teased. “And at the end of the day, it's actually not about those things. It's about change and [how] it's necessary for things to get better.” Wicked Part One opens on Nov. 22, with Part Two dropping into theaters on Nov. 26, 2025.
