Trying to achieve a healthy work-life balance is on most people's list of priorities. In the Apple TV+ series "Severance," that concept takes a dramatic leap far beyond anyone's usual 9-to-5. Adam Scott stars in the hit show as Mark Scout, an unassuming man who works at a biotech company that is performing medical experiments on employees to surgically separate their work and personal lives. As Mark uncovers a mystery about his job and himself, the experiment in "work-life balance" is questioned. Hooked? Same. Before the show's highly anticipated second season returns to Apple TV+ on Friday, January 17, you're going to want to catch up on all the mystery and drama. Learn more about "Severance" and how to stream on Apple TV+ below.

What is Apple TV's "Severance" about?

Ben Stiller on set of "Severance," premiering January 17, 2025 on Apple TV+.

Directed by Ben Stiller, following his work on Showtime's "Escape at Dannemora", the nine-episode first season of the Apple TV+ series “Severance” features Adam Scott as Mark Scout, a pretty unassuming individual. After his wife's tragic death in a car accident, Mark secures employment at Lumon Industries, a biotech corporation that is immediately depicted with dystopian undertones. Lumon Industries uses a medical procedure known as "severance" to separate the consciousness of their employees when an implanted chip is activated. The chip activates when entering restricted (read: severed) floors to prevent leaks of classified work.

Mark spends his days working at a desktop computer in the windowless, minimally furnished Lumon Industries office under the strict supervision of his boss, Peggy, played by Patricia Arquette.

Apple TV+ has confirmed that Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry and Dichen Lachman will return for the second season. New cast members will include Sarah Bock, Bob Balaban, Gwendoline Christie and more.
