The best off-road SUVs

It goes without saying that SUVs are true kings of the American highway. Sure, we love our pickups, but more SUVs are sold each year in the U.S. than any other category of vehicle, and a good chunk of those buyers expect their SUV to be able to carry them, along with their friends, family and gear, deep into the backcountry. Off-roading has gained in popularity, and automakers have kept pace by developing SUVs that are adept not only at fire road exploration but also at rock crawling, desert bashing and overlanding. Even better, several of them do it in style and with significant luxury trappings on board.

We've gathered 17 of the most capable SUVs you can buy new from a dealer and listed them in alphabetical order. No, these aren't the only ones out there that would make good off-roaders, but with their locking differentials, skidplates, aggressive tires, custom dampers and low-range gearboxes, they’re some of the best off-road SUVs you can buy in 2025.

2025 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71

2025 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban Z71

When Chevrolet introduced its all-new Chevy Tahoe and Suburban SUVs for the 2021 model year, the automaker added a rugged off-road Z71 model to the lineup. The combination of a new independent rear suspension, magnetic ride control dampers, four-corner air suspension and large 33-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires made for a compelling three-row off-roader. In addition, Chevy has outfitted its Z71 SUVs with a high-clearance front bumper, skidplates, off-road drive modes such as Terrain mode and an electronic limited-slip rear differential.

Originally offered with just the 5.3-liter V-8 engine, the Tahoe and Chevy Suburban Z71 received the 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 in 2023 and now for 2025 the second-generation 3.0-liter Duramax diesel I-6. Other improvements include an updated front fascia and large 17.7-inch infotainment screen. Sadly, the Z71 trim will be the only one for 2025 without the option of adding GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system.

  3. Surprisingly well-mannered off-road

Cons

  1. Interior materials are less than luxury for the price
  2. V-8 fuel economy is less than ideal
  3. Z71 is only trim without available Super Cruise
2025 Ford Bronco

2025 Ford Bronco

Ford's answer to the Jeep Wrangler is the Ford Bronco, which was designed from the outset to be a rugged and capable off-roader.

The Bronco brings with it a host of standard and available off-road goodies, including two-speed electronic transfer case options, electronic front and rear locking differentials, a hydraulic anti-roll bar disconnect and an aggressive, heavy-duty suspension. There are also various tire options, significant underbody protection, side rock rails, steel bumpers, cool off-road driving modes and more.

Bronco can be had in either two- or four-door configurations, with a soft top or removable hard top and in a daunting nine distinct trims. The Bronco Wildtrak offers 35-inch tires from the factory while the Everglades sports steel bumpers and a Warn recovery winch. A seven-speed manual transmission with a crawler gear can be optioned behind the 2.3-liter engine. And the Sasquatch package brings even more off-road ability to the already wildly capable Bronco. And for 2025 Ford is bringing an ever more fantastically retro vibe to Bronco with the new Freewheeling package.

Pros

  1. Rugged, retro and rad exterior styling
  2. Doors and roof are removable
  3. Many different options, all off-road capable

Cons

  1. Noisy interior at highway speeds
  2. Poor fuel economy and no hybrid
  3. Jeep’s Wrangler still exists
2024 Ford Bronco Raptor Code Orange

2024 Ford Bronco Raptor

The most capable off-road Bronco is the highly anticipated Bronco Raptor. With four doors, a removable hard top, 37-inch tires, 3.1-inch Fox Live Valve internal-bypass dampers, massive wheel travel (13 inches front and 14 rear), and a 418-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6, the Bronco Raptor is one of the most capable off-road SUVs ever produced.

Why isn't there a V-8 in the Bronco Raptor? Ford says it won't fit under the Bronco's hood. Eight-cylinder engines have powered the F-150 Raptor — including the current, monstrous F-150 Raptor R — but the Bronco Raptor makes do with a V-6. It's a 3.0-liter EcoBoost is connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission and is good for a 6.8-second 0–60-mph time in our testing.

New in 2024 was the Code Orange appearance package. It added splashes of color to the off-road Bronco's exterior through distinct graphics on the rear fenders, orange tow hooks and orange beadlock rings on the Braptor's 17-inch Dark Carbonized Gray wheels. In the cabin, Ford offers either Black Onyx or Blue with Black Onyx upholstery, which allow the model's orange three-point seatbelts to really pop.

Pros

  1. Unbelievably capable off-road
  2. Burly exterior styling
  3. Powerful EcoBoost V-6 engine

Cons

  1. Absurdly wide track width
  2. Uninspiring exhaust sound
  3. Shockingly high cost of entry
2025 Ford Bronco Sport Sasquatch

2025 Ford Bronco Sport Sasquatch

First offered on Ford’s new full-size Bronco, the Sasquatch package is now available on the 2025 Bronco Sport, adding a bevy of additional off-road hardware to the Outer Banks and Badlands trims. A key component of the Sasquatch package is the vehicle’s dual-clutch torque-vectoring rear-drive unit, previously used only on the Badlands trim. For the first time, this rear differential will be available with the 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine with the slightly less hardcore Outer Banks Sasquatch. Ride height is increased by 0.6 inch over the base Badlands and 1.6 inches over the standard Outer Banks trim to accommodate the largest-in-class 29-inch (235/65R17) Goodyear Territory RT all-terrain tires.

The Badlands’ Tenneco twin-tube front dampers carry over; the rears, however, are new, position-sensitive Bilstein monotube shocks with piggyback reservoirs. These shocks are a scaled-down version of the dampers found on the full-size Bronco Sasquatch. Outer Banks Sasquatch retains its standard front twin-tube and rear monotube shocks. Matching the upgraded suspension is a suite of new steel underbody skidplates. These include protection for the fuel tank, carbon canister, engine and a front bash plate. Oversized cast-steel front recovery hooks are standard, as are new rear tow hooks. A front brush guard is also included.

The Sasquatch package also adds a new Rally GOAT mode to the Bronco Sport’s drive mode selection. Rally mode is tuned for sand driving and offers a sharper throttle response, holds gears longer and increases steering feedback.

Pros

  1. Boxy throwback design
  2. Stylish and comfortable interior
  3. Deceptively capable off-road

Cons

  1. Less than stellar fuel economy
  2. Tight second row of seating
  3. Cool factor comes at a high cost
2025 Ford Expedition Tremor

2025 Ford Expedition Tremor

We’d be lying if we didn’t say we’ve been waiting a long time for Ford to drop an Expedition Raptor on us. While we’re still waiting impatiently, Ford appears to be headed in the right direction. In 2022 Ford introduced the Expedition Timberline, which came fit with the underbody skidplates from the F-150 Raptor along with the truck’s unique front bash guard and side step roost deflectors. The rugged family hauler also received 33-inch all-terrain tires, an electronic locking rear differential, Ford’s innovative Trail Turn Assist and Trail 1 Pedal Drive. It was powered by the same high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 as Raptor, though with just 440 hp instead of 450.

For 2025 the Expedition Timberline becomes Tremor, which is more aligned with the F-Series, Ranger and Maverick Tremor models, while retaining the same impressive hardware. The 2025 Expedition Tremor also receives a new grille with a large Cheshire Cat grin and integrated LED off-road lights.

Pros

  1. Large, spacious cabin
  2. Many standard driver assist features
  3. Packed with off-road hardware

Cons

  1. Price is expected to be on par with F-150 Raptor
  2. Historically unimpressive fuel economy
  3. No Expedition Max Tremor to compete with Suburban Z71
2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV

2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV

It should surprise no one that a vehicle bearing the Hummer name would come with a rugged off-road pedigree. Following the successful launch of the 2023 GMC Hummer EV, GMC dropped an SUV version for 2024. Fitted with an electronic locking front and virtual locking rear differential, steel rock rails, rugged skidplates and 35-inch tires (with room for 37s) the battery electric Hummer EV SUV can venture deep into the backcountry. Thanks to its innovative rear steering system, the Hummer EV SUV can navigate tight and windy trails that otherwise would be impossible for a vehicle of its stature. Its wheelbase and rear overhang are shorter than the larger Hummer EV pickup’s, providing a departure angle that rivals that of the Wrangler Rubicon. Edition 1 and EV3X models pack a potent 840 hp and will rip from 0 to 60 in just 3.5 seconds.

Pros

  1. Comfortable familiarity and luxury
  2. Menacing exterior aesthetic
  3. Excellent off-road ride quality

Cons

  1. Least efficient EV on the market
  2. GM parts bin interior
  3. Handling characteristics of an amusement park ride
2025 GMC Yukon AT4 Ultimate

2025 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL AT4 Ultimate

If you’re in the market for an upscale three-row SUV from GM and the Tahoe doesn’t quite cut the mustard, then look no further than GMC’s Yukon and Yukon XL AT4. Chevy positions its Tahoe as a midlevel trim, but the GMC AT4 is on par with the company’s Denali luxury trim. And now, for 2025, there’s a new Yukon AT4 Ultimate.

For 2025 the exterior gains new and more unique styling along with new 20-inch wheels and all-terrain tires. The interior is markedly upscale, with the AT4 Ultimate receiving the luxurious Obsidian Rush full-grain leather seating in all three rows along with a leather-trimmed steering wheel and Ash Burl wood accents. Mechanical bits are shared among the GM cousins, but the Yukon AT4 Ultimate comes fitted standard with magnetic ride control dampers, four-corner air suspension and an electronic limited-slip rear differential.

Pros

  1. The most luxurious three-row off-road SUV
  2. Now offered with the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel engine
  3. Massive new interior displays

Cons

  1. 20-inch wheels hurt off-road performance
  2. Rear cargo space lacks in the standard Yukon
  3. Price will likely push up against six figures
2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee TrailHawk

2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk

Jeep’s two-row Grand Cherokee SUV has been a staple among the off-road SUV crowd since its introduction back in 1993. Among the fifth-generation Grand Cherokee bunch, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is the most capable. Now powered exclusively by the company’s 4xe plug-in hybrid 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk boasts 470 lb-ft of torque and a 56-mpg-e EPA rating to boot.

All Trailhawk-specced Grand Cherokees feature the company’s Quadra Trac II four-wheel-drive system with a 2.72:1 low range and a 47.4:1 crawl ratio. Its rear electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD) can transfer 100 percent of torque to the wheel with the most traction, and every Trailhawk has a class-exclusive front electronic disconnecting anti-roll bar for improved articulation. Jeep’s Quadra-Lift four-corner air suspension is also standard.

Pros

  1. Decent all-electric range
  2. Packed with off-road hardware
  3. Generous amount of standard tech

Cons

  1. The most expensive Grand Cherokee
  2. Small cargo area
  3. Excessive highway road noise
2025 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

2025 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

If rock crawling is what you want to do with your life, then you're going to need to get yourself a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, which is one of the most capable 4x4 off-road SUV on the planet. The Wrangler itself is our No. 1 choice for off-road SUVs in our MotorTrend Ultimate Rankings and has received a much needed refresh for the 2024 model year.

The 2025 Wrangler Rubicon is the quintessential vehicle for conquering technical rocks, slop, mud and ruts that would tear apart most other vehicles. It has a Rock-Trac transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range ratio, Dana 44s, Tru-Lok locking front and rear differentials and an electronic-disconnect front anti-roll bar. The Wrangler Rubicon comes with a pair of great powertrain options, including the electrified 4xe plug-in hybrid.

Looking to take the Rubicon experience up a notch? Jeep now offers the Rubicon X models that offer 35-inch tires, integrated off-road cameras, steel bumpers and an available 8,000-pound Warn winch from the factory. A Dana 44 HD full-floating rear axle is also available for those looking to add even larger tires. And a Jeep Performance Parts 2-inch lift kit with Bilstein remote reservoir dampers is available.

The fire-breathing 6.4-liter V-8 Wrangler 392 was set to be discontinued in 2024 after the Final Edition. However, due to popular demand, Jeep has prolonged the Wrangler 392’s existence into the 2025 model year.

Pros

  1. Wrangler 392 Final Edition isn’t final
  2. Six-speed manual transmission option
  3. Unrivaled off-road capability

Cons

  1. Lacks on-road refinement
  2. Noisy at highway speeds with any top
  3. Wrangler 392 blows past $100,000
2025 Land Rover Defender

2025 Land Rover Defender

The Land Rover Defender was recently resurrected in an all-new form and promptly took home the 2021MotorTrend SUV of the Year award as a result of its superior overall ability, including more-than-capable off-road chops. The Defender has sophisticated off-road electronics, including Land Rover's Terrain Response 2 system that changes the throttle response, steering, stability control, four-wheel drive, differential and air suspension systems according to trail conditions. The Defender also has auto-locking center and rear differentials, a permanent four-wheel-drive system and breakover and departure angles that best those of even the Wrangler Rubicon.

The Defender is available in three sizes: the two-door Defender 90, four-door Defender 110 and extended-length Defender 130. In addition to the base 2.0-liter inline-four engine and standard 3.0-liter inline-six, the company has finally added the powerful 518-hp supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 to the lineup. This Land Rover 4x4 may look upscale, but it can get down and dirty with the best off-road vehicles on the market.

Pros

  1. Characterful exterior and interior design
  2. Rugged off-road yet refined on-road
  3. Many choices of wheelbase and cab configuration

Cons

  1. Fuel economy is subpar
  2. Software concerns appear on most testers
  3. No diesel options for North America
2025 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail

2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+

Now, for its third generation, Lexus delivers an off-road-ready GX right from the dealership floor, in the shape of the Lexus GX550 Overtrail and Overtrail+. These rough and rugged vehicles come fit with an electronic locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control and adaptive variable suspension. Now found exclusively on the GX 550 Overtrail models is the company’s Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS). When used on the trail, this system can automatically detach and reattach the front and rear anti-sway bars for improved articulation. Large 33-inch all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels are also fitted on Overtrail models and are the largest tire ever on the Lexus GX.

Pros

  1. Stylish and comfortable interior
  2. Fantastic off-road capability
  3. No third row equals room for gear

Cons

  1. Could use more power
  2. Unimpressive fuel economy
  3. It’s quite expensive
2025 Lexus LX 600

2025 Lexus LX 600 Overtrail

Newly redesigned for 2022, the Lexus LX600 is basically the equivalent of Toyota’s latest-generation Land Cruiser 300 series (also a great choice but one that's not available in the U.S. — yet) with a Lexus badge. Given that it's more than $90,000 to start, you probably won't find too many of its twins on the trail, which is a bonus if you're looking for something unique to explore the backcountry.

The big full-size luxury Lexus LX SUV is powered by a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V-6 that makes 409 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. It has a locking center differential, Torsen rear limited-slip differential, two-speed transfer case, rear anti-roll bar, downhill assist control, active height control hydraulic suspension for additional ground clearance, crawl control and a bunch of terrain modes — not to mention 19.3 inches of dual infotainment and climate control screens. So it's fancy, all right, but it's also extremely capable.

For 2025, Lexus has embraced the off-road crowd by adding a new Overtrail trim. Astonishingly, Lexus has added for the first time both front and rear electronic locking differentials to the LX. It also receives new 33-inch all-terrain tires wrapped around 18-inch wheels, along with a front skidplate, dark fender flares and all-weather floormats. A new appearance package blends interior and exterior styling with the LX Overtrail’s rugged attitude. The LX Overtrail also comes fitted with Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, downhill assist control and all the other electronic goodies we’ve come to expect.

Pros

  1. Real off-road capability
  2. Tough and boxy exterior styling
  3. Front and rear locking differentials… OMG!

Cons

  1. Bit of a rough on-road ride for a Lexus
  2. Interior materials aren’t always up to luxury standards
  3. Front bumper is still vulnerable off-road
2025 Mercedes-Benz G 550

2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, often simply referred to as G-Wagen (which is short for Geländewagen) is one of the most iconic SUVs on the planet. Due to the high price tag and propensity to land in celebrity driveways, many don’t consider the G to be a true off-roader. However, originating as a military vehicle at the behest of the King of Iran, Mohammad Reza Shah (who at the time was a significant stakeholder in Mercedes), the original G-Wagen was a rough and very capable off-road vehicle. It wasn’t until 1979 that Mercedes began producing these SUVs for the public, and it wasn’t until 2002 that the G-Class would come to the United States. Even today, the ultra-luxurious Mercedes-AMG G63 comes standard with front, rear and center locking differentials.

Refreshed for 2025, the Mercedes G550 will be offered with a 3.0-liter mild hybrid electrically supercharged and turbocharged inline-six. This new engine provides 442 hp (26 more than the old 4.0-liter V-8) and 413 lb-ft of torque. The new engine produces its peak torque across a wider rev range, from 1,950 rpm to 5,500 rpm, which proves invaluable when traversing rough terrain.

The 2025 Mercedes-AMG G63 still comes fit with the company’s legendary M177 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine. This engine offers 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. The big story, however, is the addition of a 48-volt mild hybrid system with an integrated starter-generator, just like the 3.0-liter. As with the G550, the electrification adds up to 20 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque on demand. Although this additional torque doesn’t increase peak output, it does work to add muscle on the lower end of the curve by filling in where needed.

Pros

  1. Unbelievable off-road performance
  2. The pinnacle of luxury
  3. Incredible customization options

Cons

  1. Still incredibly expensive
  2. Relatively poor fuel economy
  3. AMG G63 and battery electric G580 arrive late
2025 Nissan Armada Pro-4X

2025 Nissan Armada Pro-4X

Nissan’s big, plush, body-on-frame Armada SUV is essentially a rebadged version of the global and traditionally off-road-capable Nissan Patrol. However, it never received all of the off-road hardware its global counterpart came fit with. Until now. The Armada lineup gets refreshed for 2025 and a new Pro-4X trim joins the lineup, complete with an electronic locking rear differential, skidplates, unique bumpers and all-terrain tires. The Armada is now powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 that produces 425 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. It can tow as much as 8,500 pounds, which is a bonus off the trail. If you want to carry a bunch of people and a bundle of gear, the Armada is a good — and often overlooked — off-road option.

Pros

  1. Bold exterior styling
  2. New luxury and off-road trims
  3. Finally added a locking differential

Cons

  1. Not any more fuel efficient than the V-8
  2. Is it much better than Tahoe or Expedition?
  3. Expected to see a big price increase
2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter

2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter

The new 2025 Toyota 4Runner has been a long time coming. All new from the ground up, this 4Runner is based on the same Toyota TNGA-F global truck platform that is shared with the likes of Land Cruiser and Tacoma and features a boxed steel frame and multi-link rear suspension. Powering the 4Runner will be one of a pair of engine options, which include the standard 2.4-liter iForce and hybrid 2.4-liter iForce Max. With as much as 465 lb-ft of torque on tap, this is the most powerful 4Runner ever offered.

Toyota offers the 2025 4Runner in different trims, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and the new Trailhunter aimed at the most serious off-road users. Like Tacoma, the Trailhunter trim comes fit with ARB’s Old Man Emu 2.5-inch forged dampers and a uniquely designed ARB roof rack. The Trailhunter is lifted 2 inches in the front and sports 33-inch Toyo Open Country A/T tires. A low-profile high-mount air intake is also standard. Rock rails, steel skidplates and Rigid LED lighting round out the package.

Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, downhill assist control and an electronic locking rear differential are also standard features.

Pros

  1. Hybrid powertrain offered
  2. New Trailhunter overland trim
  3. First major redesign in two decades

Cons

  1. Third row could be a tight squeeze
  2. A lot of overlap with Land Cruiser
  3. Must wait until late 2024
2025 Toyota Land Cruiser

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser

Outside of Land Cruiser enthusiast circles, most people would never know there have been two versions of Toyota’s ubiquitous off-roader offered around the globe. The Land Cruiser sold in the United States has always been the “full-size” version, with the “light-duty” Prado remaining a global product. Over the years, the Land Cruiser grew bigger — and here, more expensive — until Toyota decided not to bring the latest full-freight model to America in 2022. It has finally been replaced by this, the smaller 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser that the rest of the world calls the Prado.

The new, smaller size isn’t the only change. This new Land Cruiser is also a hybrid. The old V-8 and ancient five-speed automatic are gone, and in their place sits a turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid that makes 55 fewer horsepower but 64 more lb-ft of torque for a total of 326 hp and 465 lb-ft, along with a modern eight-speed automatic. Toyota has shelved the KDSS automatic front and rear anti-roll bar disconnect system with a simpler manual disconnect system on the front axle only. The Land Cruiser sports a proper two-speed transfer case and retains a full-time four-wheel-drive system, and there are locking center and rear differentials.

Pros

  1. Lots of space for people and gear
  2. Trail ready out of the box
  3. Two iconic exterior looks to choose

Cons

  1. Not the 300 series people were waiting for
  2. Only engine option a four-cylinder
  3. Quickly gets expensive
2025 Toyota Sequoia TRDPro

2025 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro

Toyota launched an all-new Tundra in 2022 and followed it with an all-new Sequoia in 2023. With those, the company brought out revitalized TRD Pro variants, as well. Much like its Tundra counterpart, the Sequoia TRD Pro is outfitted with Fox 2.5-inch-diameter internal-bypass dampers that now utilize oil infused with polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE), which helps reduce friction for a better on-road feel. The new Sequoia TRD Pro ditches its old V-8 in favor of Toyota's new 3.4-liter twin-turbo i-Force Max V-6, which pumps out an amazing 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque.

Technological smarts include the latest generation of Toyota's crawl control, an electronic locking rear differential, multi-terrain select and downhill assist control. The TRD Pro gets orange LED clearance lights in the grille, an LED light bar, a tailgate release button in the driver-side taillight, a bounty of bash plates and a "Digital Camo" wrap on the fender flares, grille and seats.

Pros

  1. Edgy exterior styling
  2. Good three-row functionality
  3. Solid off-road ride and handling

Cons

  1. Unmatched, terrible turning circle
  2. Tires are too small for the vehicle’s size
  3. Noisy highway ride because of standard roof rack

The best used off-road SUVs from 2023

It's pretty that SUVs are true kings of the American highway . Sure, we love our pickups, but more SUVs are sold each year in the U.S. than any other category of vehicle, and a good chunk of those buyers expect their SUV to be able to carry them, along with their friends, family and their gear, deep into the backcountry. Off-roading has gained in popularity, and automakers have kept pace by developing SUVs that are adept not only at fire road exploration but also at rock crawling, desert bashing and overlanding. Even better, several of them do it in style and with significant luxury trappings on board.

We've gathered up 13 of what we believe to be the most capable SUVs you can buy new from a dealer and listed them in alphabetical order. No, these aren't the only ones out there that would make good off-roaders, but with their locking differentials, skidplates, aggressive tires, custom dampers and low-range gearboxes, these are some of the best off-road SUVs you can buy in 2023.

2023 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban Z71

When Chevrolet introduced its all-new ChevyTahoe and Suburban SUVs for the 2021 model year, the automaker added a rugged off-road Z71 model to the lineup. The combination of a new independent rear suspension, magnetic ride control dampers, four-corner air suspension and large 33-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires made for a compelling three-row off-roader. In addition, Chevy has outfitted its Z71 SUVs with a high-clearance front bumper, skidplates, off-road drive modes such as Terrain mode, and an electronic limited-slip rear differential. Originally offered with just the 5.3-liter V-8 engine, the Tahoe and Chevy Suburban Z71 are now available with the 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8, as well.

2023 Ford Bronco and Bronco Raptor

Ford's answer to the Jeep Wrangler is the Ford Bronco, which was designed from the outset to be a rugged and capable off-roader . The most capable off-road Bronco is the highly anticipated Bronco Raptor . With four doors, a removable hard top, 37-inch tires, massive wheel travel (13 inches front and 14 rear) and a 418-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6, the Bronco Raptor is one of the most capable off-road SUVs ever produced. Ford offers numerous accessories to customize the Bronco's styling and to add capability, and another harder-edged, off-roadable variant is coming, the Bronco Everglades, with a standard winch and a snorkel. Plus, two new color options join the 2023 Bronco lineup: Azure Gray Metallic and Robin's Egg Blue.

2023 Ford Expedition Timberline

We'd be lying if we didn't say we've been waiting a long time for Ford to drop an Expedition Raptor on us. While we're still waiting impatiently, Ford appears to be headed in the right direction, at least if the recently introduced Expedition Timberline is any indication. In fact, the rugged Expedition Timberline utilizes many Raptor underbody skidplates, including the truck's unique front bash guard. Large 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires provide the grip while an electronic locking rear differential ensures forward momentum is never lost. In addition, the Expedition Timberline also includes Ford's innovative Trail Turn Assist, offers seven distinct drive modes and gets Trail 1 Pedal Drive as standard. Powering the Timberline is a version of the Raptor's high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, which produces 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque.

2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV

It should surprise no one that a vehicle bearing the Hummer name would come with a rugged off-road pedigree. Following the successful launch of the 2023 GMC Hummer EV , GMC dropped an SUV version for 2024 . Fitted with electronic locking front and rear differentials, steel rock rails, rugged skidplates and 35-inch tires (with room for 37s) the battery electric Hummer SUV can venture deep into the backcountry. Thanks to its innovative rear steering system, the Hummer EV SUV is able to navigate tight and windy trails that otherwise would be impossible for a vehicle of its stature. And its shorter wheelbase and rear overhang provide a departure angle that rivals that of the Wrangler Rubicon. Edition 1 models pack a potent 840 hp and will rip from 0 to 60 in just 3.5 seconds.

2023 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL AT4

If you're in the market for an upscale three-row SUV from GM and the Tahoe doesn't quite cut the mustard, then look no further than GMC's Yukon and Yukon XL AT4 . Chevy positions its Tahoe as a midlevel trim, but the GMC AT4 is on par with the company's Denali luxury trim. While the exterior gains GMC's unique styling cues and the interior is markedly upscale, mechanical bits are shared among the GM cousins. Like the Tahoe, the Yukon AT4 comes fitted with magnetic ride control dampers, four-corner air suspension, an electronic limited-slip rear differential, all-terrain tires and copious skidplating.

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk

Jeep's two-row Grand Cherokee SUV has been a staple among the off-road SUV crowd since its introduction back in 1993. Among the fifth-generation Grand Cherokee bunch, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is the most capable . Now powered exclusively by the company's 4xe plug-in hybrid 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk boasts 470 lb-ft of torque and a 56-mpg-e EPA rating to boot. All Trailhawk-specced Grand Cherokees feature the company's Quadra Trac II four-wheel-drive system with a 2.72:1 low range and a 47.4:1 crawl ratio. Its rear eLSD can transfer 100 percent of torque to the wheel with the most traction, and every Trailhawk has a class-exclusive front electronic disconnecting anti-roll bar for improved articulation. Jeep's Quadra-Lift four-corner air suspension is also standard.

2024 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

If rock crawling is what you want to do with your life, then you're going to need to get yourself a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, which is arguably the most capable 4x4 off-road SUV on the planet. The Wrangler itself is our No. 1 choice for off-road SUVs in our MotorTrend Ultimate Rankings and has received a much needed refresh for the 2024 model year . The Wrangler Rubicon is the quintessential vehicle for conquering technical rocks, slop, mud and ruts that would tear apart most other vehicles. It has a Rock-Trac transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range ratio, Dana 44s, Tru-Lok locking front and rear differentials and an electronic-disconnect front anti-roll bar. The Wrangler Rubicon comes with several great powertrain options, including the electrified 4xe plug-in hybrid and fire-breathing 6.4-liter V-8 Wrangler 392 .

2024 Land Rover Defender

The Land Rover Defender was recently resurrected in an all-new form and promptly took home the 2021MotorTrendSUV of the Year award as a result of its superior overall ability, including more-than-capable off-road chops. Defender is available in three sizes: The two-door Defender 90 , four-door Defender 110 and extended-length Defender 130 .

2023 Lexus LX600

Newly redesigned for 2022, the Lexus LX600 is basically the equivalent of Toyota's latest-generation Land Cruiser (also a great choice but one that's not available in the U.S. — yet) with a Lexus badge. Given that it's almost $90,000 to start, you probably won't find too many of its twins on the trail, which is a bonus if you're looking for something unique for exploring the backcountry.

2023 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, often simply referred to as G-Wagen (which is short for Geländewagen) is one of the most iconic SUVs on the planet. Due to the high price tag and propensity to land in celebrity driveways, many don't consider the G to be a true off-roader. However, originating as a military vehicle at the behest of the King of Iran, Mohammad Reza Shah (who at the time was a significant stakeholder in Mercedes), the original G-Wagen was a rough and very capable off-road vehicle . It wasn't until 1979 that Mercedes began producing these SUVs for the public, and it wasn't until 2002 that the G-Class would come to the United States. Even today, the ultra-luxurious Mercedes-AMG G63 comes standard with front, rear and center locking differentials.

2023 Nissan Armada

Nissan's big, plush, body-on-frame Armada SUV is essentially a rebadged version of the global and traditionally off-road-capable Nissan Patrol, but without the Patrol's locking differentials. The Armada's 5.6-liter V-8 engine makes 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, and it can tow as much as 8,500 pounds, which is a bonus off the trail. If you want to carry a bunch of people and a bundle of gear, the Armada is a good — and often overlooked — off-road option.

2023 Subaru Forester Wilderness

It's not uncommon to see a Subie or two out on some of the tougher off-road trails — like the Forester, which was redesigned for the 2022 model year. With standard all-wheel drive and solid ground clearance (even more for the Wilderness), Subarus like the Forester Wilderness often make great adventure vehicles. The Subaru Forester Wilderness comes with improved approach, departure and breakover angles over the base Foresters, and it gets Wilderness-specific front and rear bumpers. It also rides on Yokohama Geolandar all-terrain tires and has an advanced dual-function X-Mode designed to aid the cause when off-roading. Additionally, its StarTex water-resistant upholstery and all-weather floormats are designed to hold up nicely to the elements.

2023 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro

Toyota launched an all-new Tundra in 2022 and followed it with an all-new Sequoia in 2023 . With those the company brought out revitalized TRD Pro variants, as well. The TRD Pro gets orange LED clearance lights in the grille, an LED light bar, a tailgate release button in the driver-side taillight, a bounty of bash plates, and a "Digital Camo" wrap on the fender flares, grille and seats.
