Friday night’s high school football game between Trinity and Etna in Siskiyou County was canceled due to threats directed at the game.

A post on the Trinity Alps Unified School District website states that “it is with a heavy heart that we must announce the cancellation of tonight’s football game. This difficult decision was made due to threats directed at the game by the Trinity fan base.”

The same statement was posted on the Scott Valley Unified School District Facebook page.

The game was scheduled for 7 p.m. at Etna High School on Friday, Sept. 27.

The statement to parents and the community went on to say that law enforcement officials determined it was safe to hold classes at Trinity and Etna on Friday and that the schools are working with law enforcement.

“We understand the disappointment and inconvenience this may cause, but we believe this is the best course of action given the circumstances,” the post said.

The post did not say what type of threats were made.

Scott Valley Unified School District Superintendent Micheline Miglis said she could not comment on the nature of the threats.

She said the Trinity Alps Unified School District, on the advice of the Trinity County Sheriff's Office, decided to cancel the game and that her district supports the decision.

"It's very unfortunate that we have come to a point and time in our society that these situations are impacting the traditions and the ways in which we want to be able to educate our students and to enjoy the benefits of public schools with all the curricular and extra-curricular activities," Miglis said.

The Trinity Alps Unified School District also did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
