Inherited from Central Franconian welle, from Middle High German wellen, from Old High German wellen, a merger of Proto-West Germanic *willjan (“to want”) and Proto-West Germanic *walljan (“to choose, select”). Doublet of weele.

Cognate with German wollen and Luxembourgish wëllen.
