A merger of two related verbs:

  1. Middle High German staren, from Old High German starēn (to stare), from Proto-West Germanic *starēn (to be fixed, be rigid);
  2. Middle High German starren, from Old High German storrēn (to be stiff), from Proto-Germanic *starjaną (to be fixed, be rigid).
