pareizs
Appearance
Latvian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Derived from the borrowed term reize (“time”), originally in the combination pa reizi (“(arranged) in order”) (reizi being here an older dative, corresponding to modern reizei) and then later as a single adverb pareizi, from which an adjective form pareizīgs was formed in the 1860s-1870s, reduced by the turn of the century to pareizs. The original meaning “in order” changed to “(well) organized,” from which it became “right, correct,” replacing the earlier Germanic borrowing riktīgs.[1]
