From Proto-Central Philippine *kúha(ʔ) (“to get; to take”). Compare Bikol Central kua, Tagalog kuha, Kapampangan kua, Maranao kowa, and Tausug kawaꞌ. According to Zorc (2021), it might be from Proto-Austronesian *kuSa (work) with semantic reassignment. Compare Kavalan kuway (to work in the field) and Isnag kuwa (to work).
