[edit]From Proto-Turkic *kirpi, which, according to Caluson, had the primary sense 'prickle, prick, thorn', and is the source for the derivation of kirpik (“eyelash”).[1][2] Cognate with Crimean Tatar and Turkish kirpi, Southern Altai кирпи (kirpi, “spiny, thorny”), Chuvash чӗрӗп (čĕrĕp), etc.
