From Proto-Albanian *skumba, nasal present from Proto-Indo-European *skewbʰ- (compare English shove, Lithuanian skùbti (to hurry), Polish skubać (to pluck)). Alternatively, according to Hamp, from Proto-Albanian *humpo.
