Inherited from Latin scamnum, from Proto-Italic *skaβnom, from Proto-Indo-European *skabʰ-no-m, from *skabʰ- (to hold up).

Cognate with Galician escano, Portuguese escano, Italian scanno, and more distantly Sanskrit स्कम्भ (skambhá).
