[edit]cờ (“board game with pieces or tokens”) + vây (“to encircle; to surround”), calque of Chinese 圍棋 / 围棋 (vi kì). Compare Japanese 囲碁 (igo).
Attested in the Dictionarium Anamitico Latinum (1773 manuscript), listed alongside cờ tướng, cờ tiên and cờ song lục as various board games.[1]
