[edit]From Old Danish beletæ, borrowed from Middle Low German bilede, belde, Old Saxon bilithi, from Proto-West Germanic *biliþī (“picture, image”), cognate with German Bild. Old Norse bilæti (“icon”) is also borrowed from Low German.
