Etymology

From archaic and dialectal balgë, balëgë, from Old Albanian baljëgë, from Proto-Albanian *balgā, from Proto-Indo-European *bolgʷ-. Compare Greek βολβός (volvós, bulb), Armenian բողկ (boġk, radish). Borrowed as Romanian baligă; metathetic bagël gave northern Italian bagola, bagula.
