Etymology

• Proto-Austroasiatic: *ptiːɕ (Sidwell, 2024, #AA124)
• Proto-Mon-Khmer: *pt₁is ~ *pt₁iis ~ *pt₁i(i)t (Shorto, 2006, #1903)

The Bahnaric and Khmer forms underwent metathesis *-t-s > *-s-t. The Khasian form is from earlier *tis, with regular fortition of final *-s.
