[edit]Unknown; suggested to be from Proto-Indo-European *spreg- on the basis of Albanian shpreh (“to express, voice”). Alternatively cognate with Old Norse spraka (“to crackle, patter”), Lithuanian spragù (“to crackle, patter”).[1]
