Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *(s)kel-, from Proto-Indo-European *kelh₁- (to call, to shout, to sound) with a s-mobile. Cognate with Latvian skaļš (loud; noisy) and Russian скули́ть (skulítʹ, to whine).
