Etymology

Unknown, probably attested as Ancient Greek Γέβαλα (Gébala) or Γέβαλαικα (Gébalaika) in Ptolemy's works. Michelena links it to Gothic 𐌲𐌹𐌱𐌻𐌰 (gibla, pinnacle) and Ancient Greek κεφᾰλή (kephalḗ, head).[1]
