[edit]Orthographic borrowing from Chinese 圓/圆 (yuán, “circle” > “round coin”) referring to the piece of eight (compare Japanese 円 (en), Mandarin 元 (yuán)). Doublet of 엔 (en, “yen (Japanese currency)”) and 위안 (wian, “yuan (Chinese currency)”).
