Korean

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

From Middle Korean 별〯 (Yale: pyěl), from Old Korean 星利 (*PYEli). In the hangul script, first attested in the Hunminjeong'eum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례), 1446, as Middle Korean 별〯 (Yale: pyěl). Compare dialectal forms 비얼 (bieol), (bael), 베리 (beri), (bil), (bel), etc., some of which appear to preserve the original bisyllabic form.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [pjɘ(ː)ɭ]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
