Etymology

[edit]
Kanji in this term
いぶか
Hyōgai
kun'yomi

From Old Japanese. Some sources cite this first as ipukasi- in the Nihon Shoki of 720;[1] however, that may only be traceable to supplemental glosses added later to the kanbun original. Other references cite this to the Man'yōshū of 759,[2][3][4] where this word is attestable in both rebus and phonetic spellings.[5]
