[edit]Possibly from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *baːr (“bloom, flower”); compare Burmese ပန်း (pan:) or Zaiwa pan²¹, as well as 疤 (OC *praː, “scar, cicatrix”). Probably the same etymon as 瓣 (OC *breːns, “petal”) (Schusessler, 2007).
