Glyph origin
[edit]Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *broːwɢ, *poːwɢ) : semantic 牛 (“bull, cow”) + phonetic 暴 (OC *boːwɢs, *boːɡ). However, the phonetic component also means "to stick out, to bulge; to expose", so it could add part of the meaning. A conservative version is 𤜌; later, the character was stylized into 犦.
Etymology
[edit]Perhaps from 暴 (bào, bó, “to stick out, to bulge; to expose”), due to the zebu's hump.
