Etymology

[edit]

Schuessler (2007) considers this a *-t derivation of Proto-Sino-Tibetan *nwe (warm), whence also Burmese နွေး (nwe:, warm; lukewarm), နွှေး (hnwe:, to warm something; to revise). However, Schuessler (2024) notes many cases where medial *-w- is deleted after non-velar initials and before *e and seems to relegate the above etymology to (OC *ŋjed, “hot”) instead; he instead compares (OC *n(i)ot) to Tibetan རྔོད (rngod, to fry; to roast), though this is not without problems either.

Either way, (OC *ŋjed, “hot”) may still be related (Karlgren, 1956).
