From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-dz(j)a-k/n/t/s (to eat; food; to feed; rice); cognate with Tibetan (za, to eat), Burmese စား (ca:, to eat), Chepang [script needed] (jeʔ-sa, to eat), Japhug ndza (to eat) (STEDT; Schuessler, 2007; Zhang, Jacques and Lai, 2019). Possibly related to (OC *sʰaːn, “to eat; meal”) (STEDT; Schuessler, 2007).
