Etymology
[edit]Originally a compound of 五十 (i-, “fifty”, combining form) + が (ga, Old Japanese genitive particle) + 嵐 (arashi, “storm”), with the initial a of arashi dropped due to lack of vowel clusters in Old Japanese, hence the literal meaning "fifty storms".
